You're right on the money TGS. We're all residents of the planet Earth, one large community, and our neighbors need help.

We should not turn blind eyes to the plight of the average Haitian man in the street because of the (perceived) failures or corruption of their government. And BTW, 80% of their population is Catholic - whether or not someone thinks that is Godless is up to them.

Having done a number of disaster relief operations in my Navy days, I know that things were bad there before the earthquake. And now, without food, water, electricity, medical care - I hesitate to imagine the pain and suffering.

This type of thing transcends national boundaries or politics. These are our brothers and sisters and turning our backs on them diminishes us.

Right on! It's not religious or political, (though some people want to see it that way.) It's a sad disaster. They need help.

Peace, Gridlok

However, HIV surveillance in the Caribbean is generally considered inadequate, so these reported trends are only vague indicators. Both HIV prevalence and AIDS cases are thought to be widely underestimated in the region.

This is a concern as refugees from Haiti are brought to the USA, are they testing for infectious diseases first? I'm worried because the testing won't be done until they arrive ( Haiti doesn't know because the health care system there has been overwhelmed since forever) and how many will slip through without being tested and then sending their children to day care or public school. Will we see an upward spike in HIV and other diseases in our population here. With Haiti being closely associated with AIDS since the early 80s as well as other diseases I wonder why the CDC and people in charge of taking care of the sick haven't expressed any information about how this very dangerous situation can be dealt with. Is there a plan in place, do they have a plan or are they just going to say "we're sorry" when Americans start getting affected.

In two countries in this region - the Bahamas and Haiti - more than 2% of the adult population is living with HIV. Higher prevalence rates are found only in sub-Saharan Africa, making the Caribbean the second-most affected region in the world. Half of adults living with the virus are women.

AIDS is now one of the leading causes of death in some of these countries, with Haiti being the worst affected. An estimated 7,500 lives are lost each year to AIDS in Haiti, and thousands of children have been orphaned by the epidemic.

All people

Country Living with HIV/AIDS
Deaths due to
Adult (15-49) AIDS during 2007
pop. rate % deaths '07 estimates
Dominican Republic 62,000 1.1 3,900
Haiti 120,000 2.2 7,500

It should be noted that the above figures are estimates and are made with a large degree of uncertainty. For example, the number of people living with HIV in Haiti is estimated as being between 100,000 and 140,000, and the figure for Cuba lies in the range 3,600 to 12,000.

Profiteers and people with an axe to grind usually don't take to long to rear their ugly heads after a crisis.

my personal take is: these are people who are in desperate need of help. they are incapable of dealing with this tragedy without our help. Thus we should help. hell, I don't even particularly care if they are grateful or not.

i have donated to a relief fund. sometimes you have to just do something because it is the right thing to do.

These people didn't exactly have things too rosy before this happened, and I can only imagine how terrible it is there now.

No political diatribe or long story from me either. The Haitians are people in need right now, regardless of their religious beliefs, government or any other factor.

The only thing I'd add is -- be sure you know who you're donating to. The fake charities and criminal scammers are already popping up. Each time something like this happens, I'm amazed at how many get taken in because of their desire to help and because criminals are all too willing to help you out of your money. For instance, here in LA after the Northridge quake, they caught some criminals going around with fake ID and other materials designed to look like Red Cross ID cards and handouts.
