Ah you young whippersnappers ... damn hippies!

I think what made the music better years ago was that the musicians/singers had to rely on pure talent. Take a look at the Woodstock CD. No lasers, harness flying over the crowd, dance troupes, and no lip synching! Nowadays there is to much reliance on technology to make up for lack of talent and to present a production. How many of us geezers remember the club shows with minimal production.

I do.Concert tickets didn't cost a hundred bucks for a half decent seat either. I remember seeing Frank Zappa and The Mahavishnu Orchestra for like 10 bucks. They had "dance concerts" where you sat where you wanted and saw 2 or 3 bands for $6.50. Alice Cooper was one of the biggest production acts out there and tickets were still cheap. Clubs were even better. A $2.00 cover or even no cover and you could see great performers.

Today you can sing like garbage and your voice can digitally be corrected for pitch. Paris Hilton is a prime example.

I still think you need to go beyond BillBoard top 40. There is a lot of good stuff out there.

Seriously, turn off your FM/XM radio because the really good $@!& is not on there. Browse myspace and youtube for little known bands. That is how I found a plentura of great stuff (at least I think it's great, to each his onw). Put some of those bands in a pandora stattion and you will find even more.

I do remember 2 concerts form those days that did use harnesses...I saw Earth,Wind, and Fire opening for Sly stone at MSG....one of the guys came flying down to the Garden Stage from the ceiling on a zipline...it was COOL!. I also saw Emerson, Lake, and Palmer where the beginning of the show, Keith Emerson came down from the ceiling upside down strapped to his piano bench and the piano slowly made its way upright as it descended...also COOL.

The way i see it is, if your young now (which i am) you can listen to whatever good music there is (Kings of leon, fleet foxes, vampire weekend and biffy clyro are all good examples) and you can also listen to old music an enjoy it.
Whereas if you lived back in the 60s and 70s you could listen to the music that was around then but you wouldnt be able to enjoy the good music that has come out since then (Not that i wouldn't like to see some of the greats live).
You have to know where to find the good music, its not going to be in the billboard 100.
And i think we should go out and do something about the music industry rather than complain about it.

I agree that today's mainstream secular rock is horrid. The country isn't much better. I listen to classic rock, country and today's Christian rock. These three genres of music is honestly produced for people to hear. Most of this generations mainstream music is produced just to draw a crowd that will pay way too much to see someone with that special look put on a show of dancing and lights. I really feel for you younger artists out there because if you do have true talent you are more than likely a copy of an older star or you just don't have the looks for the music bussiness. I guess if we were all blind we'd have to be good to get our music sold.

But you can still listen to the music of us oldster's, and if you enjoy it, well then you enjoy it, good enough.

And access is so much easier now, back in my day it is was 45's on a box with a flip to lid and a needle the size of a ball point pen, parents bought a used stereo in a furniture cabinet, only one speaker worked, one side of the cabinet was used for storing glass ware, they thought it was ok. 8 track tape players with the speaker built in. Small town am station only played modern music one hour a night, couldn't get radio from larger cities, didn't have a lot of excess cash to buy records, so each one was so important. Music on tv was the Ed Sullivan show, Sony and Cher (etc) and Don Kircheners rock concert on Saturday night. Didn't see a big name concert until I went to university, Stones in Buffalo and Dylan in Toronto.

A little different now, comin' at ya every which way, any time of the day or night. often free.

Herb is so much better now as well. So grow your hair long and enjoy.

An 8-track is something I never had....turntable and tape deck for me...I still use both, somewhat updated...a 1984 B&O Beogram 1800, and a Nakamichi 1984 BX150, both in fine working order :D

This brings to mind something I saw Tom Lavin of The Powder Blues (click for a sample if you aren't familiar with them!) say in an interview. Ironically they are an 'old band' now, but the sentiment in the late 70's wasn't completely different than it is now, that good music was in decline. Anyway what he said was along the lines of the reason they formed the band was that all they heard on the radio was becoming disco or other bland pop, and that since no one was making music that they wanted to hear, they had no option but to make it themselves.

Mike, did Elvin Bishop die, too? I knew Bloomfield died a whole long time ago....

Elvin put on the best live shows ever. Saw him in Hollywood, years ago.
It was awsome.

BTW, todays generation does kinda suck. Take your choice:

1. Mindless pop drivel

2. Profane, machine made rap

3. Seething, hateful aggro-rock

4. Post pubescent bubble gum

5. And hip-hop. Soul music's evil twin

I'll pass.

Taurus, exactly what I was trying to express, my choices of words, old, huge umbrella of interpretation combined with the others and meaning gets obscured, The phenomenon of the almost improvisational style of musics' like ability, wonderful we all love it to the....we play it. I felt a surge of inspiration with the changes, swing, jazz, rock, pop, disco, metal each of those is a huge umbrella but it seems we all like something about all of it. From the first listen, rap changed songs.....I wanted to change the channel and it's a close call some what tilted by age group. All of the older people I have known like something about all of the before changes of music, a true phenomenon, so, who's idea is it to continuously pump this... its been years now, what is the purpose, who's call is this you know young people are impressionable proven by the phenomenon of all those other changes, we all know that, Taurus, yes?

Hey! I'm probably older than your parents, as are many people here.

To quote Doctor Evil: I'm hip, I'm with it... 8)

I probably wouldn't play guitar if the internet didn't get me started learning the basics, so that's what I meant by that. :P

My Dad is a computer graphic designer, and PCs and his profession didn't even exist when he was in college so he's actually doing quite well in the newfangled technology department. On the other hand my Mom doesn't know the pause button from the play button on the remote.

texasguitarslinger Graphic Designers were around forever just without computers. They called them Graphic Artists.

Commercially, music is pretty bad. If you can, go to local venues and see local musicians. That's where the talent is, at least until the record companies get them.

The thing is, this music slump can be "fixed" so to speak by you young folks. Disco died, so can the Lady GaGa stuff. Turn off all the high gain, unplug the millions of effects and then get your tone.
You'd be surprised at what your guitar really sounds like. Don't matter if your amp is tube or solid state. Add the effects for color.

Be creative with your melodies and lyrics. Don't worry about looking cool and posing. It's harder to play a guitar slung down by the knees. Learn different styles of music. Try fingerpicking and slide. Try alternative tunings. Learn some Jazz, Blues, Grunge, Metal, Folk, Ballads, and combine different things.

When I was kid. I turned down playing in a seriously working county band because well, it was a country band. I turned down working at 16 because I thought CM was just lame.

That money could have bought me some really sweet gear, a car music lessons, but like a dumbass I stayed in the garage playing with a band that went nowhere. I could have been getting experience playing in front of people at 16 but didn't. I was too busy playing for the girls in the neighborhood.

Oh, and it's not the anti- American socialists doing this. It's the consumers with disposable income. Why does it always have to come down to either blame the anti- American socialists or Obama LOL. IT's not political!!!!!

63, indeed I did word that too broadly, I posted it differently above Bro.
