Mike, did Elvin Bishop die, too? I knew Bloomfield died a whole long time ago....

Elvin put on the best live shows ever. Saw him in Hollywood, years ago.
It was awsome.

BTW, todays generation does kinda suck. Take your choice:

1. Mindless pop drivel

2. Profane, machine made rap

3. Seething, hateful aggro-rock

4. Post pubescent bubble gum

5. And hip-hop. Soul music's evil twin

I'll pass.

Bill, let me tell you a story.

There are guys in my generation.. this honestly is painful to say.. have never heard of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, or Bob Marley. True story.

I don't even like reggae, but WHAT? WHAT?!?! I had to change their lives, one album at a time.

So Bill, the moral of the story is: That is easier said then done. :-[

That's why I'm kind of glad I grew up when I did. Great musicians and bands from Chuck Berry to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, To Zeppelin to Zappa. No cell phones, answering machines, the big video game was pong, kids were kids a bit longer. It was a bit simpler. Calculators didn't come out until I was a couple of years out of high school.

Some of the stuff being passed off as music is depressing. It's a shame. There are still some good new bands around, you just rarely here them on commercial radio. I did have a death to disco tee shirt LOL.

Its not your generation Bro. Its a bunch of old anti- American socialists doing their very worst to destroy any musical freedoms dumb-ing down creativity in our youth to turn them into drones that can be pushed in any direction they choose. Please just keep playing and singing and teach your children to as well. It is our only hope for the future.

I agree with everyone here. Today's music sucks crap. All it is is screaming some obscenities into the microphone and calling it "screamo".

....

WTF?!?!?

I mean, I agree with texasguitarslinger. I wish I was born in '45 or somethin'. I completely ended up in the wrong era.
I hope to bring even just a LITTLE bit of classic rock to the music I play. I don't EVER want to sound like this synthetic noise that's considered "music" these days.

Say "Farewell!" to the days of Woodstock, good bands, and big 80s hair, and say "Hello!" to the days of computerized noise, vulgar lyrics and videos, and talentless joe-schmos wanting to twang some power chords cranked out at 11 which are laiden with massive levels of distortion.

Lovely.

I probably wouldn't play guitar if the internet didn't get me started learning the basics, so that's what I meant by that. :P

My Dad is a computer graphic designer, and PCs and his profession didn't even exist when he was in college so he's actually doing quite well in the newfangled technology department. On the other hand my Mom doesn't know the pause button from the play button on the remote.

Hey, disco was a necessary evil - if you wanted girls, you had to dance.

But at least back then there were good alternatives for music. While I shamefully admit I danced to Donna Summer and the Bee Gees, my '65 GTO's 8-track blasted Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and Deep Purple. Nowadays, your choice is, uhm ... limited.

I asked a 30 yr-old coworker what bands from today will be considered "classic" in 20 - 30 years. In other words, who would be the Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd of his generation. His only answer was Metallica. Metallica? Really? I know they still have a huge fan base, and I like some of their stuff but if that's the best from the last generation, music has indeed died.

There's no doubt in my mind that 20 or 30 years from now, there will still be Classic Rock "stations" (of some form) - still playing the greats from the 60's 70's and 80's. The fact that many from this generation realize the sad state of music today shows there's still hope and even when the boomers (my generation) are all gone, good music will live on. Maybe some on this very forum can be a part of the change.

I'm just glad I'm not of this generation so I don't have to dance to rap - as bad as disco was, at least it was musical! (I kinda' dug the feathered hair too!)

It is generally accepted that the mid 60s to mid 70s were the renaissance of rock music. What is passed off today as music is largely mass produced vacuous tasteless audio pablum being force-feed to the musically obtuse millions like so much packaged fodder with a complete lack of substance for no other reason but to haul in obscene profits for the record companies.Sadly the public blindly buys into this fully, what the music industry needs is another shake up like the one caused by the British Invasion, but realistically I don't think an event like that will ever happen again......Pity.

texasguitarslinger Graphic Designers were around forever just without computers. They called them Graphic Artists.

Commercially, music is pretty bad. If you can, go to local venues and see local musicians. That's where the talent is, at least until the record companies get them.

The thing is, this music slump can be "fixed" so to speak by you young folks. Disco died, so can the Lady GaGa stuff. Turn off all the high gain, unplug the millions of effects and then get your tone.
You'd be surprised at what your guitar really sounds like. Don't matter if your amp is tube or solid state. Add the effects for color.

Be creative with your melodies and lyrics. Don't worry about looking cool and posing. It's harder to play a guitar slung down by the knees. Learn different styles of music. Try fingerpicking and slide. Try alternative tunings. Learn some Jazz, Blues, Grunge, Metal, Folk, Ballads, and combine different things.

When I was kid. I turned down playing in a seriously working county band because well, it was a country band. I turned down working at 16 because I thought CM was just lame.

That money could have bought me some really sweet gear, a car music lessons, but like a dumbass I stayed in the garage playing with a band that went nowhere. I could have been getting experience playing in front of people at 16 but didn't. I was too busy playing for the girls in the neighborhood.

Oh, and it's not the anti- American socialists doing this. It's the consumers with disposable income. Why does it always have to come down to either blame the anti- American socialists or Obama LOL. IT's not political!!!!!

Interesting that this topic came up the day after the latest American Idol started. Watch that show and you will see everything that is wrong with music today.
