How do you even measure that,
Why would you even want to rank them against each other,
and Who really cares?

You dig their music? Then dig it. Why does someone have to be better than someone else? I don't get the need to rank everyone.

What kind of question was that? It's like comparing Django Reinhardt and Robert Johnson. Two great players but different genres.

I didn't mean to expand this into arguments about other guitarists, etc. I just had seen so many mentions of JM stinks or JM is terrible etc that's all I was wondering about.

So, which Mayer Tune do you all think will go down in history as the quintessential Mayer Tune. Ya know, like....
Hendrix Purple Haze,
SRV - Pride and Joy,
Clapton - Layla, Cocaine, Lay Down Sally, et al,

Anyone, Anyone.....

I don't think Mayer wrote it yet.

For me and this is just personal opinion. it's
Hendrix's "Red House" and Clapton's "Crossroads Blues".

I don't think Mayer wrote it yet or really ever will. LOL
I think he'll be more famous for bagging Jennifer Aniston.

If John Mayer is an extraordinary musician in your opinion, then what about Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, etc. who were light years more talented then Mayer.... and they didn't have to make those wretched faces when they were really playing !!! Too each his own though !!!

LOL!

That's called guitar face.
Check out Gary Moore for the definitive guitar face king.

Lol - very true, but it's obvious that Moore is feeling the music he's playing. Mayer looks as if he's been practicing the faces in front of a mirror - there's no feeling, it just looks fake ... as if he's only doing it because that's what's expected.

But really, what someone looks like when performing doesn't influence my opinions about them in the least as an artist. (One of my favorite singers is Joe Cocker and he doesn't exactly look uhm, normal when singing - lol) I could probably stomach Mayer's "guitar face" if I really believed he was feeling the music - but I don't. The voice and the face, simply comes off as fake.

Listen to Jonny Lang's "Lie To Me".

Yeah, he doesn't look the part - only 17 at the time, but is there any doubt this kid was feeling the music when singing and playing? I don't get that at all from Mayer.

For me "The Blues" needs to have a certain "feel" to it. Sort of a grit and grime, John just doesn't have it.

I tend to agree.

Hendrix and Clapton were pumping out memorable tunes by their first or second albums. Mayer, well........
