I'm a newly converted fan of JM the guitarist. Stumbled across his acoustic version of Petty's "Free Falling" on You Tube. Checked out some of his blues playing also. The man can play and has talent. And who among us would not want to have been in his shoes when he was playing "your body is a wonderland" with Jennifer Aniston (oops a whole nother thread). I think some of his pop stuff, and his eccentric attitude seems to turn people off.

The man allegedly smokes a ton of weed. It'll hamper his playing sooner or later.

He is not of my generation, but I actually thought he was a pretty good guitar player and still do. I always enjoyed hearing him play whenever he popped up on TV. But then I saw a video of him prancing around on a cruise ship, nearly naked and acting like an a-hole. It made me lose whatever respect I had for him.

I'm in the "like his blues suff, don't care for his pop stuff" category. The man can truly play his guitar and I'm certain he could outplay me any day. I was in this discussion with a Mayer fan a while back (he enjoys the full JM catalogue) and he made a good point:

He beings a more mainstream audience in with his pop stuff and then introduces (sad to say the man in an abassador to the blues) them to his blues stuff. He helps give more people to opportunity to hear the blues who otherwise would likely not give it the time of day.

I thought it was a valid point and certainly worth sharing here.

His guitar faces creep me out though, but then again who's guitar face doesn't do that?

If John Mayer is an extraordinary musician in your opinion, then what about Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, etc. who were light years more talented then Mayer.... and they didn't have to make those wretched faces when they were really playing !!! Too each his own though !!!

For the life of me , I truly hope this guys pecker is not very long ,for if it is it would just be another inane reason to dislike someone with a ton of talent. You guys should truly be ashamed of yourselfs, when I was growing up EC as you call him was known as "slow hand", JIMI was said not to be able to play a song the same way twice and lord if all you pot heads were to give up the" herble essence" where would we all be. Let the guy play we all have our favorites if you don't like his style change the station. To put it in real context Terry Kath was better than EC and a very close second to JIMI...IMHO

Can't take his expressions and his voice! I guess I can handle his guitar playing (some of it). In small doses.

the same way you don't understand the hate, a lot of people don't understand all the praise that gets attached to him. Don't worry about it, if you like him it doesn't matter what anyone else says, you'll just have to ignore it.

Personally I don't think the guy is anything special as an artist or a guitar player, but I am doing better to stay out of these conversations because everyone has their opinion.

My oh my more turmoil.lol Lets get a few things straight Clapton was noy given the name because he played slow and Hendrix and most artist rarely play a solo live the way it was recorded.

I had just put up that Mayer was on the cover of Guitar World with the heading being king of pop or the blues. There was a feature on Joe Bonamassa in the same issue and both stories could not of been treated any more different than you could get. Bonamassa was treated as a serious hardcore blues player who is the same age as Mayer 32 but you would of thought he was around 2 decades longer.

No one can dispute Mayers talent as a songwriter as the guy has a gift for turning out songs. The bottom line is this is a guitar forum and not a songwriter forum and everyone's interest is with playing, and in that respect he has not come close to proving a thing except he is a capable guitarist.

Most great players have stamped who they are by there mid 20s that is a fact with Mayer I still dont have a clue where he is at or going. He is one shrewd mother and knows how to stretch it out to make money in different markets but he still does not have a true identity.

I am also tired of hearing people going on about jealousy. If you want to feel jealous I am sure George Clooney has a web page and no one is banging or getting more quality tail than him. Gene Simmons has nailed about 4,000 broads and I never hear hating about his limited bass skills, so please lets put that one to rest because Myer is at the bottom of the bang list when you look at the power house bands from the past yet that is not brought up as the main focal point when they are spoken about.

The only way he will shut up the critics is with his guitar and some great work. If he never opened his mouth and said his love is for guitar and has always been and he only did the pop stop to get himself in that position to make music like that we would not even be having these conversations. He would be John Mayer pop singer songwriter superstar and you could take it or leave it. He is far from a stupid guy and I never buy into that thinking people dont care who hears there music or could care less about the money. If that was the case everyone would stay in there bedroom.

I still think the guy could put out an album that proves he can really bring it but to be honest I dont think it will happen as it should of been done already and at 32 the clock is ticking.
