I don't know JM, I've never seen JM live, I've only maybe listened to 1% of JMs catalog. I don't mind the guy at all really. Unless somebody asks me what I think of the guy. Then I say I hate the guy more than a hernia that was operated on by a surgeon who was under the influence. I don't know why I do it, I just do by instinct. Of course unless the questioner happens to be a rather attractive young female, then I say I love John Mayer, he is my favorite artist and why I play guitar.

I kind of like him. What is disappointing for me, is that I believe he has real talent, and for some reason doesn't let it all out.

I don't hate him, I like him alot when I can't sleep, I put on his album and within minutes I am off to sleep...he is just bland to me nothing inspiring. it is a shame because he has a ton of talent.

John Mayer is an extraordinary musician, IMO. On forums like these you will always find tone snobs, artist snobs, guitar snobs, amp snobs and just plain basic snobs. Don't pay any attention to other people's opinion because they're almost always wrong because your own opinion is all that counts.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I don't hate him, I just simply don't listen to him thats all bro.

+1 I just feel he's overated and not in the least bit original. He's just another assclown. I think he even stole his faces from GE Smith. Only thing is Smith has an original style.

I agree 100%. He's a smart $@! who likes to just chill and be a guy but he does what he wants and IMO he's very talented.

i learned long ago that the talent that someone has and what they choose to do with that talent are two different things.

i believe john mayer is talented...and don't dislike him...but what he chooses to do with his talent is not my cup of tea.

although he did play one song...a pretty inspired version of manic depression with jeff beck, when i saw Jeff beck last april...but then again maybe i was just so psyched by seeing jeff beck, the incredible tal wilkenfeld and the rest of jeff beck's band...that left me with the impression that mayer was pretty good that night.

All I can say to the non-fans is to watch 'Where the Light Is'.
It's a truly outstanding concert. If you watch that, and STILL say it's not your cup of tea, then I'd say that's fair. But if not, I'd say you're missing out on his greatest work by far. 'Stop This Train', 'Neon', 'Out Of My Mind', and 'Gravity' are highlights, but I like most of the songs on there.

Almost everyone agrees that he can play the guitar well. I would add to that his excellent (IMO) songwriting ability.

OK, I agree with everybody, it just makes me remember 'in this race, if you are not the lead dog the scenery doesn't change much'. I guess I'll just keep on writing in the hope my band gets a shot at the lead and everyone is as easy/hard on us. That would be cool. 8)

He's really not that good. If you can go to bars, on any given weekend you'll find people as good if not better. IMO 8)

Fair enough feedback, I was just wondering because it seems in lots of discussions I've seen here there's a "as bad as JM" comment or two so I was just kind of wondering why?

I would take 1/2 his talent and be happy though. :D

To me, "Daughters" is a really great song. While it may have been a hit, it is miles away from being anything close to a "standard pop song".

No, you won't. Never forget that what makes an artist is s-o-n-g-w-r-i-t-i-n-g. There lots of people who can play, but very few who can play, sing, and write ... and do them all very well.

Yes, you can. Come on down to Philadelphia Pa or check out some clubs in NY and you can see it any night of the week. Tons of local bands here are a lot more creative and talented than Mayer. Just because you're a commercial success doesn't mean you're a great original songwriter or musician. Some great local musicians are happy doing what they're doing and have no interest in commercial success.
