Really, I just don't get it, maybe I'm missing something about John Mayer. After all, when it comes to playing I am clueless on lead playing as a rule. I know the pentatonic positions but so have not figured out how to make a solo out of them that doesn't sound like a scale.

So what's with all the JM hatred, really, is he just a poser to people on here?

Was he a "privileged white kid" so he has no right to play the blues? (please pardon the racial reference)

Is his playing that predictable or boring to you all?

Is his pop music leanings killing the image of a "blues" player?

Is he not ugly enough?

I'm not looking to start a controversy here but I don't get it. I'd be very happy to play at that level, just wondering what's up since I hear his name slung around here in an unflattering way.

For me he simply makes the blues seem plastic and he fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
I don't hate him, I just simply don't listen to him thats all bro.

i think it has to do with the fact that people dont see him as a purist. he doesnt act or write the same as our guitar hero's therefore he must not be as good. i dont understand all the hate either. i have listened to him plenty of times and i think he is extremely talented. he is just like any other artist, either you like him or you dont. no doubt his music isnt for everyone.

I just don't care for his style of music - reminds me of EMO bull crap.

And the real shame is that he CAN let it rip - he just chooses not to. I remember seeing him a couple of years ago on that "environmental" day with the bands around the world - "LiveEarth" was that it? He did a version of "Waiting for the world to Change" that really, really impressed me.

Then I watched the Beacon theatre show and he bored me to tears.

So it irritates me when all his fanboys - who either want to be him or sleep with him or some combination of the two - rave about his guitar playing and compare him to EC or SRV. Because he (disdainfully to his audience, in my opinion) deliberately doesn't display what he can do.
He chooses to play that insipid, uninspiring, teeny-bopper crap.

Ho hum. Change the channel.

You know being a recent John Mayer convert I think I know exactly why people dislike the guy. 99% of people just hear his generic songs like "Wonderland" or "Daughters" and think he's some pop tool but he's not. His blues stuff is pretty good, I think he should stick with that myself. What I think is ironic is that I myself find most artists who take themselves too seriously pretty annoying where Mayer doesn't take himself seriously at all and it's frustrating. If he did I think his stuff would be more like his Continuum album and be much better. He'd rather just play his adult pop instead and make money. Either way I think he's an extremely talented artist who should be ignored at your own risk.

It's hard to put into word that aren't subjective, because it is a subjective subject.

What I don't like about Mayer is what he Doesn't have, he doesn't have anything of his own to bring to the music.

He's like a Ventriloquist who only does Edgar Bergen jokes and you can see his mouth move.

I certainly don't hate or dislike him in any way. I'm not a fan of most of his music, but there are some pieces that I do like.

That said, I *think* that Berklee (Music School) may be trying to give him a push as their last student to make waves (so to speak) was Johnny A about 8 years ago, but hey, what do I know?

I've tried to like guy simply because he CAN play. But everything else about him screams phony to me. His voice seems entirely fake - like he's desperately trying to be something he's not. (and I really, really can't stand the faces he makes - something I've never-ever felt about a singer, even those I don't like) And is it just me - or is there something just wrong about a kid dressed like a mommas boy in a preppy golf shirt playing the blues?

And then there's the self-absorbed, arrogant attitude. I've watched more than one Mayer concert where he literally thanks the audience for their great taste in music! Well gee... conceited much? During an interview at Crossroads concert where he shared the stage with Clapton, he said (paraphrasing), "it's an honor to be handed the torch like this". Uhm, I don't think EC is handing over anything quite yet, son.

I don't hate the guy - he's talented, no question. I just can't stand to watch or listen to him sing. (I've yet to get through an entire show) Has nothing to do with not being a "purist" - SRV wasn't a purist, but this guy needs to figure out who he wants to be. And lose the self-importance.

All IMO, of course ...

I don't even need to add anything, that pretty much sums it up.
