I've really had to work to cut the list down to get to this short list

David Gilmour,
Jimmy Page,
Stevie Ray Vaughan,
Frank Zappa,
Tony Iommi,
Robert Fripp,
and of course Nigel Tufnel

Wow 3 pages and no one even mentioned my #1 guy- Santana, maybe the best tone ever heard by these ears. Brian May- maybe the most original tone to come off a set of fingers. One note and I know who it is. Gary Moore- be it a Strat, Tele or a Paul he makes it sound thick, fat and creamy.

May and Santana were both mentioned on the 1st page.

MY 3 tone faves (in no particular order):

~David Gilmour (black strat)

~Duane Allman/Dickey Betts (I count these two as one)

~Edward (the godfather of tapping and master of harmonics) Van Halen

Like Beaubs I too would like to give an honorable mention to Billy Gibbons and his copious use of pinch harmonics.

also an honorable mention to SRV for his refining the styles of both Jimi (my personal Jesus) Hendrix and Albert King into an eargasmic art form! Also worth mention is his ability to grind a note/string into oblivion!

Jeff Beck,Rory Gallagher,Roy Buchanan but I'd be remiss if I didn't include Jimi because he could coax any sound imaginable(and some not imaginable) from a guitar and amp.I know that's 4 but I absolutely had to put in these guys.I saw Roy and Rory live and was amazed by the tones they created,Roy with no effects and Rory with what appeared to be two.
