If I had to compare Mayer to a historical Guitar Player/Singer Songwriter it would be Billy Squire. Certainly not Hendrix or Clapton.

Theres what red house that didnt, you could include hear my train coming or midnight lightning but hendrix never saw fit to release either.

Which is too bad, personally Midnight Lighting is one of my favourite Hendrix songs. Unfortunately during his time period blues was not very popular and hendrix couldn't make a living as a musician playing blues... I'm not trying to imply that it was Hendrix that made that decision, probably his managers. From the interviews I've read he definitely preferred to play blues but was forced in other directions.

Ok he's evolved as time has gone on, but only changed enough to let his fanbase evolve with him.

Good point, it took Clapton 20 odd years to go from his Creme days to Unplugged to From The Cradle (A big jump between these two releases) to Blues and these days he plays mostly Robert Johnson songs. A very big change in style but over a long period.

Because he's a draw, not because he's good.

I don't think BB King, Clapton, Cray or Buddy Guy need to include Mayer to draw a crowd. I saw BB & Buddy play back before blues was popular again the house was packed.

Yeah my dad always bemoaned my listening to Hendrix (I was a 80's kid) stating Hendrix's stuff as just being comercial junk. He'd only ever heard Purple Haze and probably Foxy Lady and dismissed him as being a psychedelic sellout (He had no time for hippies :D ). However my dad wasnt that bad, he turned me onto a lot of good blues and pop (squeeze, dr feelgood, roseroyce, 10CC), that I just wouldnt have heard without his influence.
Hendrix was pushed to release commercial stuff by Jeffries, particularly when he first came over. Hey Joe whilst blues was particularly 'in click' at the time apparently. Then he started coming it with all these mad sounds and showmanship. Perhaps thats what JM is trying to do the safe bet, then the risky guitar player album. I dunno. The guys gonna do what he wants and probably doesnt need any advice off me. I just think he needs to write a pop album that storms charts everywhere then get on with playing what he wants to play. Hendrix's main frustration was people telling him what they wanted to hear.

Agreed on Midnight Lightning, it's haunting isnt it.

That's my thinking. These guys don't need some new guy to play with them just so they can be cool. These guys invented cool.

They do constantly need new fans though. Its a sad fact but people pass on or just get too old to go out to gigs and aren't really that intrested in new material. How would BB feel if he outlived all his fans. Surely its a horrible prospect for such an acomplished entertainer. If Mayer got 5 of his teenybopper fans to listen to the Clap because of his gigging with him, then he's done good in my opinion.
