Just finished the cover story interview-The Double Life Of John Mayer The King Of Pop Or King Of The Blues- in Guitar World.

I would recommend if you see a copy grab one as it is a good blues issue with a story/interview with Joe Bonamassa as well .

Well the Mayer interview was really good as he talks about many things. He has stopped using a pick altogether now and just uses his fingers as he says he is trying to define his sound. On having a Fender artist series guitar he says "I really stand behind them. Some of the best compliments I ever get are someone saying they are not a Mayer fan but that's the right Strat"

He must have a thing for Vanhalen guitars as I have seen him on youtube playing a Peavey Wolfgang and in the article theres a picture of him playing a FrankenStrat. I must admit he is a very smart guy as he knows his music history very well from both sides, knowing all the great players as well as all the great flat out song writers.

He says he is on a big Bill Frisell kick and says that after this pop album he is really excited to pick up the guitar again and open another door as he states he is going to bust out with a guitar record to keep himself happy. He also admits to not being the most muscular performer on record and goes for the sweet sound. And that he also gets told he plays to much blues or he jams to much, and as he bounces from one musical style to another eventualy everyone will get satisfied.

He states it might take a few years but he like the idea he can say with a slight bit of good humored contempt "You'll get it when I give it to you.
Well I think he is a very gifted writer no doubt about that, and he can play guitar. Well if his next album is going to be guitar based and you want to give it to me -give it to me with some fire , passion and make it greasy. I would be really happy if he knocked me on my $@! with a barn burner of guitar work based around some good songs. For me he has not done it yet. Do I think he can do it? Yes, if he drops that mellowness and turns up his attitude and lets it fly.

John is simply just another Girl Toy in the gray Pop World. i dont think "fiery, passionate blues" when i hear his name. he knows the chicks dig the sensitive qualities. the conclusion here being don't expect that mellow character in his style to go away.

"he also gets told he plays to much blues or he jams to much". i rest my case right there. the teeny boppers and college chicks get bored with this stuff. they usually manage to ignore the music when they're watching him live though...

I guess that's why he's played with all of the blues greats because he slept with Aniston.

Dunno about you but I'd have a few issues, mainly serious depression never mind blues. If I had to put up with that whiney voiced bad actress for any amount of time. The only other one to rank lower (or higher on the anoyance scale) is that Sarah Jessica Horseface. I reckon if JM went out with her for a bit he'd be playing like Robbie Johnson and Howling Wolf multiplied by Muddy Waters.

Whether I like Mayer or not is unimportant. I do however think he needs to stick to one form of music. I cant think of one artist, (maybe zappa) who has constantly played different styles and not antagonized his audience. Fans just feel alienated and betrayed when the change happens.

That is an excellent point.

Regardless who he's slept with, and what he is criticised for, he's where he is ..........and you are here posting their negative opinions, and whining on a forum. Opinions vary. I'm sure some of the guys saying he doesn't deserve his fame and reputation, would change places with him -or anyone else in his position - in a heartbeat. Be happy for him, he's paid his dues. Just because he doesn't conform to your tastes don't mean he should step down and go hide in a closet somewhere. Get over yourself.

Let's face it, the guy has some good chops and he's having fun. How much differently would any of us behave under the same circumstances? Would you ignore J Aniston if she was interested in you? He plays blues to satisfy his soul and he writes pop to earn a living. I am not a fan at all but I've listened to his blues, he's not bad.

I happen to think he's great personally. I think that people don't like John Mayer the person rather that John Mayer the artist and it clouds their vision. Now I'm not going to sit here and say that I liked Wonderand or any of that stuff but as far as his playing I think it's great. Where the Light is is a cool show and it showed me a lot about him.

Because he's a draw, not because he's good.

I wouldnt ignore her. I'd probably undergo facial reconstruction, change my name and emigrate. She's bloody anoying enough on TV. In real life she'd drive me to murder.

That's what I was thinking. They share the stage with him because he's popular - and with a younger crowd. It's a great way to introduce their music to a new audience.

TV? You realize those are just characters, right? She gets points deducted in my book for dating JM (and being in the Hollywood limelight in general), but in real life she'd drive me to something a bit different!

Stratshooter

What about the endless screenings she attended a few years back, the interviews all the rest of the tripe rammed down our throats. I'm sorry but I just do not find the vast majority of Hollywood B movie (what was the last great film out of hollywood) stars that attractive. Or tv stars for that matter.
Their constantly pushed at us, as this is the way to be, this is sexy, this is what you should want. Sod that. Gimme a woman with some meat on her bones, a brain in her head and a good library of cookbooks.

I likes em built for comfort, not speed.
