How a guitar is set up is a personnel thing ..So when i buy a new guitar it always goes to Dewit at Scotty's music for its first setup truss rod adjustment and intonation.. it also get's set to gauge of strings i want to use on that guitar which is different depending on type of a guitar for me it can be from 9 to 11's ..Dewit is my guitar tech and he understands what i want and can understand how i want things done even if i don't explain it correctly..Plus he doesn't charge but 15 to 20 bucks including strings so why not let him do the first set up...

But with all this said the guitar store should have the guitar close enough to give you an idea of tone and playability...Think of how many guitars you may have passed up because you didn't like the way it played or how the action was set or it had a fret buzz or was a little flat..I now i have passed on many that i may have bought if they would have done at least a half $@! set up..
