If they have a certified tech for the brand your talking about…….doing it your self is not that hard….if you have a multi meter and a plastic screw driver.

some amps like mesa have a fixed bias and dont need ajusted when you change power tubes..

here is some how to

A buddy of mine has the 65 Twin reissue and It's a dream.A little over a year ago I picked up a used Vox AD120VTH and I can't say enough good about it.Although it's solid state it has a tube driven pre-amp and that's what makes the difference. It can emulate the sounds of many popular new and vintage amps such as Fender Twin,58 Princeton,59 4-10 Bassman, several Voxes and Marshalls,Mesa Boogies,Soldano and even Dumbles.I don't know about the rest but the Marshall and Vox settings are so close it's uncanny and it does give the lush Fender tones. It has many song specific settings and you can program many of your own.The effects are deadly especially the modulating ones like Univibe,Leslie, flanger etc.It is truely many amps in one and the beauty is you can pick them up fairly cheap.I was looking at an AD120VT combo yesterday for $600 and that was with the VC 12 foot controller which costs $275 alone.

Well you dont make clear what price range or power you are looking for but I can tell you one of the best finds you can get for about $300 used. A Crate Vintage 50-yes I hear the giggles. Well 10 years ago I was in my friend Timmies store and he had about 20 used amps and I asked him which was the best one in the store for a classic rock- blues based tone and that is the one he told me. Now I knew Crate was not known for tube amps but this model the beige one is all tube. I plugged in and in five minutes it came home with me as he was not lying.

If you checkout Harmony Centrals user reviews you will find this amp has one of the highest ratings for tone ,about 95% and after reading up on them I read that Paul Reed Smith even owns one.

The drawback is it weighs about as much as a Volkswagon and the tubes were not put in the greatest spot to replace. Other than that if you are lucky you can still find one on ebay for no more than $300 to $350. It has two channels a clean and a dirty and you can go from AC/DC to Zep and it sounds great. My Blues Junior which cost more money does not come close. If you are not going to bounce around gigging I would say try and find one as it sounds as good as anything 5 times the price.

If you can get in and try a Carvin V3 go for it.

Hey Mike, you asked for advice but forgot to tell us in your original post what kind of music you play, where you play it, and what your budget is.

You might want to have a look at the Egnater line of amps ... great quality at great prices. There are a few of us here on the Fender forums that are big fans of Egnater.
