I have a Strat constantly tuned to Open G and a Tele that is permanently in Open D.

I use the Tele mainly for slide so the action is set really high, with heavy gauge strings on it.

I play lots of Stones stuff with the open G in addition to slide.

I keep my strat tuned down by half. Took the D-tuna off my wolfgang and just keep it in drop D. My JEM is set to standard tuning and the LTD is currently set to, C# G# C# F# A# D# (I've been playing linkin park on it lately) but is usually tuned to E also.

Hello,

I tune to Eb on all my guitars with a trem. I my mind, 10 or 11 gauge strings tuned to Eb just works. I like the ease in which i can bend notes especially on necks with a 7.25 radius. The three without trems get the tuning changed regularly, usually drop D tuning. Having plently of guitars alows me to set up tunings that would be advantageous for certain riff / tunes I'm working on. Its also much less hassel to change tunings on a fixed bridge as I don't have to reset the trem etc,

As Nikininja mentions random tuning helps keep things fresh. I find that when my creative juices dry up this usually does the trick.

I'd like to get a drop D tuner (or two ...or three) just so i can hit a harmonic and the drop the tunner Michael Manring style (way cool)! I've seen Michael Manring play live a couple of times and seeing what that gut does with his Zon hyper Bass is something special. He's the Bass players Jeff Beck in my mind. Heres a clip for you to check out

Hope this helps

Enjoy

Andy

I've tuned down a halfstep before, but don't really consider it an alternate tuning as such--the relationship between all the strings is still the same.

But these days I either tune standard or in open G--I've devoted one guitar to open G--and have been doing that for about a year.

Before I always just retuned a guitar between standard & open G--so I never stuck with it, now I'm learning it.

And for slide and some other blues stuff, it works great.

I use a lot of drop D but that's not really what you're looking for I don't think.

I also spent a long time with my old guitar tuned down 2 whole steps =
C F Bb Eb G C for heavy alt-rock. Queens of the Stone Age. It gives a really cool sound - you might wanna try it. Just capo the 4 and you're in standard tuning. It's also a lot easier to bend.
