"Only locally" was my response. Lots of bar gigs, plus the occasional large theater:

County Fair:

Local/regional fests:

As far as opening for big acts, the band Against Me! is a pretty big punk band, they opened for my band about 9 years ago. But since they opened for us, maybe that doesn't count. I also played bass for Bo Diddley once, but since I was in the band rather than opening I guess that doesn't count either.

But no, if you don't live in my town you won't have heard of me, much less heard my music.

hey krashpad, thats some pretty cool gigs! rock on! I've only played small pubs, clubs, bike runs/benefits, and a couple small fest, maybe 300 in attendance at best. Playin' with Bo must of been a thrill. Everytime I see Buddy Guy, I want to jump up on stage and jam. cool pics.

Well my daughters (6 and 1) think I'm a rock star and once my wife came running down the stairs when she heard a cover of Purple Haze that I was watching on youtube and thought it was me. That was my biggest gig to date.

Thanks man, I love seeing pics of people rocking out, this thread seemed like a great excuse to post some, as a way to encourage others to do the same, haha!

Yes, the Bo gig was a once-in-a-lifetime deal, for sure. Making it a smidge more challenging was that there was no rehearsal, and no sheet music or even lead sheets. We just had to make it up as we went along and follow Bo as best we could. Could've been the proverbial train wreck, but I got lucky and had one of the greatest nights of my life.

That sounds like a good gig! It's cool when your kids think of you as a rock star! Mine just know "I'm famous in my own mind!" My daughter turned 16 over the summer and plays bass with me in our church's praise band, maybe yours will turn out to be musicians too, since they have a rock star to look up to!

I can't say I'm famous but locally I've had people come up to me and say "Didn't I see you play at......","Aren't you the guitarist with...."or when I tell someone my name(usually in a music store)people will say"Aren't you the guy with all those guitars and amps"or once upon a time before Iwas hit with this bloody arthritis"Aren't you that "Hendrix" guy?"I used to play whole sets of Hendrix covers,I must have done something right because we were always getting gigs.

Isn't that cool when people come up to you and ask whether you're in such and such a band or whatever? I once had someone ask me if I hadn't been in the Atomics (my very first, very obscure-- even locally-- band, that had played a few parties and a couple club gigs)-- some 20 years later! Another time I was shopping in the grocery store and some college-age kids came up and asked "Aren't you Brian Krashpad?"-- my kids refused to admit it, but I know they secretly thought that was pretty cool; same thing happened once with my kids when the clerk in a gas station convenience store recognized me.

Has anybody been asked to sign autographs?

It's kind of embarrassing when you're just in a local piss-ant band, but it's happened to me a couple times. Once we were playing a festival with some big name acts (Train, Sister Hazel, the Wailers) and had artist laminates to get us backstage of the mainstage, where the free food and free beer were. Now for me, free beer and free food for an entire weekend (plus seeing a festival for free) is plenty cool to begin with, but anyhow this attractive young lady some 20 years my junior comes up to me and my lead singer and, seeing our "Artist" laminates, asks for our autographs!

We told her that we were just in a local band from 30 miles away, but she would hear none of it. So when it became clear that we couldn't talk her out of it, we ended up signing a couple paper plates for her, haha! The really funny part was, the bass player for the Wailers was sitting about 20 feet away having his dinner and she didn't even notice him.

Ah, "fame!"

;)

I've signed the odd photo and been asked to get a picture with a few times too but I do not like it. It just feels wrong to me.

It is a cool gig :D I have to say that my 6 year old turned to me one day and said out of the blue "daddy will you be my guitar teacher?" I was so happy and proud that my little girl would want to follow me down that path. I think that everyone should know how to play an instrument, speak one different language, be good at a sport and know some sort of self defense. The guitar was my last conquest and I wish I had spent all of youthful hours doing that instead of golfing. I;m just glad that I started when I did. Maybe one day my daughter will be playing beside me and I can enjoy the pride that you must feel.

Outstanding!

Believe me, it rocks.

My Hannah with her 16th birthday present (she'd been borrowing my basses prior, which obviously she still can do):

Image

When I was a kid, my dad (an officer in the US Navy) traveled the world and brought back instruments, telling us kids (5 of us) that whomever could teach themselves to play one could keep it. I still have his no-name '70's MIJ acoustic guitar, and a banjo of his, both now mine. I decided to continue the tradition-- if my kids learn an instrument they'll either get one of mine or I'll buy them one of their own (depending on how many instruments of the type I have-- I have tons of guitars but only a few basses). It's a wonderful gift to give your kids, and tons of fun for yourself.

Best wishes!

Great story and pic. Bo Diddley is a legend in my book.

Never heard of me... Sometimes my wife wishes she never heard me play... hahaha... But hopefully one day one of my daughters will pick up the guitars bought for them and become known.

meh, not exactly famous either I'm afraid... maybe one day! I've done a short appearance in a pub gig, and a friend of mine used to do some private gigs for various people, was rather limited as we have no singer atm, so it's all instrumental versions lol  :)
