Do you use/prefer an All-In-One pedal or many Single Effects ones?

I hope I spelled smorgasbord right  I'm asking this because I really have never used pedals and I'm looking to get one (or many). Becaseu of my inexperience with them, I'm wondering if folks prefer having one do all, Boss GT-8 type pedal or the pedal board full of single effects pedals.

Multiple Single Pedals. Multi-effects units to me are like huge Swiss Army knives, a few things get used all the time, some things never get used at all, so why carry all that extra stuff? I always find that pedals are like tools, and most tools that do more than a couple things can't really do any of those things as well as the one tool that was made to do the job.

That being said, if you're new to effects, a multi-unit may be a good place to start to get an idea of what the various effects are and if you can use any of them with your sound and style.

I have two major complaints with multi-effects units.

1) The output levels are nearly impossible to get right. Each setting has a different level and inspite of several hours to get this right, it just doesn't work for live performance.

2) While many of the effects in the multi-units are very good, the Overdrive and distortion settings are nearly impossible to blend properly with the rest of the effects. The levels are all over the place and it just doesn't work in a live performance unless you have a great sound man riding the sliders.

Multi-effects units are great for "in-home" use but they're nearly impossible to use of stage.

Thanks for the responses guys- I actually have an old Korg AX1G pedal and the effects aren't too bad but the noise level is ridiculous. I bought it years ago and pretty much never used it because it was so darn noisy! So I'm going to have to try a bunch I guess- I'm still looking at the E-H Holy Stain pedal- that looks interesting but I haven't had a chance to try it yet- looks like it just has a few effects, but EH usually has a good rep, so maybe that might be what I'm looking for.

For what it's worth, a lot of guys buy a multi-effects unit and use it only for the non-overdrive effects. They buy a seperate pedal for that. If you can resist using the built in OD, you'll have a lot more good options available to you.

I vote single pedals. I hate multi pedal "switch lag". Plus you get a better quality from a single, dedicated unit.

i prefer single pedals, i think they do the job more effectively than multi, since they're designed for only one thing, but they can get expensive...i had a multi effects and it was decent, but not as good as single effects pedals

Multiple singles, although I just bought a PODxt, the bean not the floor model. It's difficult to change the POD's settings on the fly for live gigs, but it's great to record with. Maybe the PODlive is better.

À la carte vs. Buffet

In regards with most things (food, pedals, etc . . . ), and with very few exceptions, there is usually a higher degree of quality when the pedal (& food) specializes its task for its intended purpose.

It will sound (taste) better :!:
