Hi all,

I know this is a Fender forum and this isn't about a Fender guitar but I thought since people here were quite knowledgeable, I would post this here.

I took my 21 year old Maton 12 string out of it's case today and happened to look near the nut and saw that there was some wrinkles in the paintwork there. I haven't noticed this before but then I must admit that I haven't looked closely there for a long time.

Can anyone suggest what this might be and whether I have any cause for concern? The factory for these guitars is (fortunately) here in Melbourne and so if necessary I can take it to the luthiers there but I thought I might ask here first.

Thanks in advance

CK

might be temp. and climate changes, which can crack and check the finish on your guitar. Is it real dry where you store your guitar ?

Hi chriske: does the nut seem loose? I wonder whether it is shifting a bit when the strings move over it and so stressing and destressing the lacquer in that area.

Out of interest, do Maton have a customer service facility? If so I'd take it to them just for the sheer fascination of visiting one of the great makers. A good excuse to enter over the threshold!

Cheers - C

Dutchy: The rest of the guitar looks fine. It's not excessively dry in my current home and these guitars have been stored under my bed. Melbourne has a fairly temperate climate.

Ceri: I'll need to take off the strings to have a look at the mounting of the nut. I just noticed this yesterday and haven't really had a chance to investigate.

Maton used to have a customer service facility when they were in their Bayswater factory as I remember taking this one there about 15 years ago. I'll call and see what they do these days.

This instrument originates from when they were in the Surrey Hills factory and they were much smaller than they are now. They produced 3 of these CW80/12's in one run - I snagged one and a friend picked up another. While we didn't get a tour of the factory, we did have a bit of a walk through and met the owner.

This guitar was stolen from my home about 10 years ago but the idiot sold it to a pawnbroker in the area a couple of days later. I had been there and left a list of what was stolen along with the serial number of the Maton. The pawnbroker did the right thing, called it in to the cops and they got me to come down and identify it as mine (no problems there - I knew that instrument so well :D ) and they charged him over the theft. It was the only thing I got back but it was also the only thing that really mattered to me in the theft.

Hi again chriske: well if you go there and get to have a little look around be sure to take some photos, please! I know it's the Fender Forum, but I'm sure nobody will object to some behind the scenes pics of another of the world's great makers!

Good luck with the guit - C
