I need help. i need to buy some sort of recording device. It doesn't have to be a $3000, high quality sounding one, it just has to be a cheap, affordable (under $100), recording thing. It doesn't really matter if its not its main feature, I mean it can be a cheap mp3 that can record. Can a Ipod nano 3g record? Can a PSP slim and lite record?

I know you can get lots of cheap (under $100 US) MP3 players that record. You most likely could find one at your nearest department store.

Here's one on sale at WalMart for about $70. I'm guessing they come even cheaper than this

My main recording device (for getting song ideas on tape) is a cheap Radio Shack cassette recorder that I got as a Christmas present nearly ten years ago. You could probably pick up one of those for around 20 bucks!

Yeah but the problem is I live in Australia  . I could buy a crummy mp3, but then I'd feel guilty cause I've gota Ipod, my parents bought it for me and I wouldn't be using it as much.

I use this
http://www.shopping.com/xPO-Samson-Zoom-H2-Handy-Portable-Stereo-Recorder-2GB-Accessory-Kit-catAZOOMH2K1-Digital-Voice-Recorder

I'm a complete dullard when it comes to recording. I use this for exactly what you want it for. Press the button, pick the guitar up, record some song ideas, send em to my band via email. Thats a Aussie dollar price too. Ok it may be a bit above what you want to spend, but it does the job well. The build quality could be better but its not bad. Its a plastic housing but the screen is set well back giving it a good bit of protection.

If you know someone that has one... check out a FLIP digital camcorder. The audio on the devices is quite good.

A clip to show a buddy the sound of my cruiser... also the new "man Hut".

+1 on the zoom H2, recording quality sounds good, easy to use.

Just to add to that, I bought my dad (a good amateur classical player) a Zoom H4. It is also nice and of course has extra features - but I'm not sure for what is being requested it is worth the extra cash. I think that H2 covers the essential stuff and is good at the price.

It seems what goes around comes around because about the same time I was buying that H4 as a gift for my dad my wife was buying me a Boss BR Micro.

That's also a neat little item, a little more expensive than the target price but loaded with nice features for the guitarist. Four track recording, tuner, an optional extra stereo mic, facilities to load music and use it as an mp3 or play-along device, far more FX and simulations than you could possibly need, yadda yadda...

I have a big Yamaha AW1600 home studio, but I must admit for most of my tinkering I now use the BR Micro because it is so quick and simple. And also portable - I often take it to demo guitars through in shops, so I can play with sounds I already know, can shut out background noise a bit with the ear buds, and don't need to worry about "performing" for others present in the store. Ideal!

Cheers - C

Why not download Audacity (free) and get a 1/4 to 1/8" adapter to run from your amp's headphone out to your computer in. ($3 at Radio Shack)

Hi riley, Those are only $40.00 in the states and it didn't get very good reviews... the one Nick pointed out is better. Have you thoroughly checked Apple for add on recording devices for your iPod??

Just a thought...

if you want something cheap for song ideas only then why dont you buy a dictaphone? get one with a memory stick rather than a tape though if you want to email ideas. just a thought

Hi eccentric0: I think from the link he posted above that is what rileytheguitarist had in mind.

Privately I think it might not be the best idea. I suspect you'd play into the thing a few times and then realise how inadequate it was for recording guitar sounds. Then you'd go out and buy one of the dedicated small guitar recorders already suggested on this thread and wish you'd done that in the first place.

Few things more fun (and frustrating) than your first experiments with simple multitracking... :D

Cheers - C
