GAS is a terrible thing. I am GASing for two things right now. A great cheap tube amp (looking at the Super Champ XD or Blues Jr.) and a Boss Delay (DD-7). Lucky for me these items are nowhere near as expensive as what you are GASing for. When you get it, post pics (I know this is a Fender Forum, but I like looking at any great guitar).

Welcome to the GAS club Mike I know the feeling all too well. When I went to my local guitar store to pick up guitar #24 I saw the absolutely most beautiful Les Paul I've ever laid eyes on,it was a perfectly mirror imaged bookmatched cherry sunburst Eppy.I want it so bad it hurts but my finances prevent it.I need to get gigging again to support my habit.

Hey Taurus I do work at the food city in Tennessee but why do I not need to leave my valuables in my car?

I too am gassing for a Les Paul......I would like to secure the Gold Top Model....I am however, short on the large amount of cash for this model so I will be saving, and saving, and saving.

Its really all about the hunt though...isn't it?

Yeah I will definitely be saving but I'm wanting an ebony finish with a white pickguard but saving and hunting for the guitar is definitely half the fun hahaha

Mike-- if you're still young and not making a lot of dosh, you can either get an Epiphone (or other import copy) or look for a used Gibson. While I did manage to buy one new Gibby LP a number of years ago, it was a less-expensive Les Paul Special model and on closeout ($500 w/gigbag). Used is much better bang-for-buck. I have 2 Gibson LP's currently, both bought used.

In the "other copy" category, consider an Agile AL-series guitar. These are comparable to Epi's (in many cases, better) but cost less as they do not have the Epi-Gibson brand name to support. I have an Agile Valkyrie (SG-type guitar) and once I bought it I sold my Epiphone G400 SG. Agile guitars are at:

http://www.rondomusic.com

The guy who runs Rondo Music, which sells Agiles, is Kurt, and he's a good guy.

Wow I will definitely look into that where would be the best place to buy a used gibson

It depends on your local area. I'm from Gainesville Florida, which is a college town with a hot music scene and lots of starving (and sometimes not too bright, or desperate) musicians, so I'm "spoiled for choice," as the saying goes. (A couple years ago, Blender Magazine declared that Gainesville was the best place in the USA to start a band, haha!)

If you are in a big enough town or city, definitely check out craigslist.org. It's an online classified ad website that includes a "musical instruments" category. I haven't bought either of my Gibbies from "CL," but I have bought numerous guitars and basses there. The great thing about CL is that, because it's local, you can try out something in person before you buy. Along similar lines, if you have a local music scene big enough to support its own website (in my case, it's gainesvillebands.com), these often have a classified ad section as well. That's where I happened to get both my Gibson Les Pauls-- a Les Paul Studio Doublecut, w/hardshell case ($525), and a Les Paul Classic, w/original hardshell case ($750). I must caution you that those were both really good deals though.

Last, there's always ebay. However, I just don't feel comfortable spending Gibson bucks for a guitar I can't try out first. There's always the small risk that the guitar never materializes, or has a major flaw that the seller won't make good on. I've bought a couple guitars on ebay, but never over $300. And it is common for small things to go unmentioned by ebay sellers. In my cases, the unmentioned flaws weren't deal breakers, and/or the seller agreed to a discount. But there's no guarantee you would be as lucky.

Happy hunting!
