Just curious. I'm using a Fender video and I don't hold my pick the same way. I tend to hold it between my thumb and middle finger for some odd reason (it's hard to describe).

Any tips?

Thanks.

:D Hold it the way you are most comfortable. Many pickers hold the plectrum between thumb and 1st finger because it gives the other 3 fingers of the picking hand access to the strings below the pick. This is sometimes called double picking or "chickin pickin". Many country guitarists use this style.

As you become more profecient in your strumming technique you may want to consider trying the thumb and 1st finger but there's nothing wrong with the way you're doing it. I catch myself using the middle finger as a guide for the tip of my pick when I'm playing leads or scales.

I use the thumb and first finger but sometimes add the second finger to partially mute notes immediately after plucking (up only) for effect. This method sometimes encourages harmonic feedback to blossom under high gain conditions. This can also be done with thumb and first finger alone if you "choke up" on the pick enough. Then you can get the effect either up stroke or down.

Oh that's' perfect!
Thanks!!!!!

That makes a lot of sense. That's better than my other video. I'll try holding it better like that.

Again, thanks everybody. :D

My pick is a triangular pick strapped onto an old peice of protractor. So I hold the protractor part in my hand, an I just have my thumb on the pick.

Just hold it the way it feels most comfortable. If thumb and middle is comfortable like Zontar stated it works for Vanhalen than so be it. Steve Morse holds his with his thumb and index and middle. There is no wrong or right.

I use my thumb and first finger. Fender medium tear drop shape. during solos, I hold it close to the tip so my thumb can brush the strings lightly to create different sounds, and muting.

I hold mine with my thumb index and middle and it works fine for my playing style. I don't drop it this way as i would with just my thumb and index finger. The only thing that really makes a difference is how much of the pick you hold. If you choke up on the tip it will give you a stiffer attack but if you grab closer to the middle or the butt of the pick it will bend or flick easier which is better for strumming.

LadyVendettaAngel,

It really has to feel comfortable for you. I use a Duncan Nylon 0.88 mm standard pic. I hold it between my thumb and pointer finger. The backside of the pick rests on the finger long ways and the thumb holds it in place. As you state, hard to describe. For me this adds enough stability for the aggressive attack I use.

I was about to start a new topic on this but I did a search....

Now, I hold v-picks or dunlop thumb picks using my thumb, and my pointer finger. My thumb's usually curved in, and the pickks resting on the3rd or 2ng knuckle of pointer

I tend to use my thumb and forefinger with very little pick sticking out or at least less than most people do.
