Today I went and purchase a glass slide from my local music store to learn how to play slide guitar. Any tips and starters?

Thanks :) I joined the praise band at my church this year replacing this guy who's off to college, and in a way I want to be different than he was (he was one of those guys who sounded amazing but had no clue what scale or form he was in).

I'm suppose to be the lead guitarist too, and I think that it'll be cool to bring some versitility to my playing, instead of the usual riffs and such.

Learn muting with both hands--they both are useful in various situations.
If you an learn the muting well, that's a big part of the battle--The resources mentioned should have info on muting.

Post a vid when you learn how to play slide guitar. I have picked up a slide when ever one was around but do not own one, cool sounds, looking forward.

Excellent point about the muting with both hands as it is probably the most important thing. Start off with an open tuning like G, E or A and listen to a lot of slide playing.

let your fingers behind the slide mute the strings for unwanted drag noise, also your picking hand. slide should be straight over fret for correct notes, sound, as you will notice with practice. take your time and practice as much as possible. cool free slide guitar lessons/tips, google search.

Ya'll are definitely right about the muting... Hopefully I'll get good at it so that way I'll have something I can do that the previous guitarist in our praiseband couldn't... I feel like everytime he's around I just sound pitiful compared to him lol...

He's an awesome friend though, but he's one of those people who don't know much of the theory behind what he's playing- it just comes natural to him

He's got years on me though too I only been playing for a little over two years now and I've come pretty far.

Hope it works out for you.
I'm still not that great on slide--having tried it off & on over the years--but recently I've started to get more serious about it--picking up tips on line and from books, as well as from people.

I used to use my third finger--but I got a new slide that fit my pinky better and it just took off from there.

So I would also say--get a slide that fits & is comfortable--I know you have one already--hopefully it fits.

And experiment with different fingers--most people use the ring or pinky fingers, but see what works on your hands.
