I currently am a beginner using an acoustic guitar and have had several months of lessons. My guitar instructor told me it would probably be easier to learn on an electric guitar (in his opinion) since the acoustic causes more "hurdles" for some people.

Anyway, I like the idea of the electric guitar whether he is right or wrong.

My son has a Squier Affinity Strat that I have tried to play. With my medium sized fingers I do a lot of sting muting on this guitar. The width of this neck at the nut is listed in the specifications as 1.61" but upon measuring it with a micrometer I can never get a reading above 1.565".

I am looking at possibly a strat or tele mim that they list nut width size as 1.65

I have not had a chance to play one in the store yet but what other guitar options could you guys recommend?

Thanks

MIM guitars are really great. i have a mim tele and i think it is almost as good as my american strat. for a beginner an MIM strat or tele would be great for you.

I have a MIM Strat and Tele both are great guitars just as good as other brands costing much more.BTW I also have a Stratacoustic which is the best of both worlds,it has a Strat neck yet is acoustic and sounds great when amplified.

Magicman, you are going to be doing ' a lot of muting' on any electric gittar
you play. Muting is the subtext always going on under guitar music. But, good news, it is learned without theory, concepts or lessons as you master
each passage you wish to play. Concern over muting certainly shouldn't be
the main concern in seleting an instrument. Have fun.

It is commonly stated (and I believe it to be true as well) that electrics are easier to play than acoustics.

Now this may just be me. But I find it easier to fret individual notes on a fretboard with a higher radius. For example, I have an EC-1000 with a 12" radius which I find far easier to fret than my strat that has a 7.25" radius. The lower the radius the more pronounced the arc of the fret board. Now they both measure 2" at the 12th fret, so there is no actual width difference between the two necks, yet the 12" radius fretboard feels far more roomy.

Do you mean unintentional muting, like you are playing a C chord and your middle finger is touching the G string not allowing it to ring out. Or do you mean palm muting as you have stated you are not playing long so I cant imagine you mean left handed muting.

If this is your problem this will go away with practice and learning to play on the tips of your fingers .As far as a guitar I spent many years on an acoustic and always still love to play one. Since you are not going to be jumping into lead playing anytime soon and if you like your acoustic I would stay with it awhile longer as you will strengthen your fingers much better than on an electric and when you do change it will feel that much easier.

When you go look for an electric set a price range and play as many as you can and you will know the right one.

Depending on your budget, either a MIM Standard, a Highway 1, or a Squier Classic Vibe 60 Stratocaster would be one of the guitars I'd get.

I am talking about unintentional string muting. I always am muting strings on the affinity strat that I have no problem with on my acoustic. That affinity neck is so darn narrow!!

Thanks for the responses. I have been eyeing either a Tele or Strat MIM.
