I finally upgraded my tuner from a Boss TU-12 to a Boss Tu-2. I have been wanting one of these for a while and finally bought one. I also got the power supply for it and the daisey chain to power my other pedals. I just got it in today and tuned all my guitars with it. The only guitar that needed serious tuning was my daughter's guitar...The rest were pretty close.

Boss Tu-2 with all the stuff for powering other pedals...$120.

Not needing batteries when playing...Priceless

Excellent tuner. My TU-15 is still holding up but is to small to throw in a chain but that is definitely the tuner I would get.

Question for you guys since you seem to know "what's what" with these tuners.

I have what most good musicians would likely call a crap amp being of the "non-tube" variety. It's a Behringer V-Tone GMX 210. But I like it mainly because "it's what I have", it was inexpensive, has lots of effects, is loud if I want it to be, has a tuner built-in, and meets my beginner needs.

So, that said... here it is. When I tune the guitar, the tuner in the amp seems to work best with the guitar volume control turned up to 10. Does one normally tune a Stratocaster at that setting or should I turn it down to tune? Frankly, to my uneducated ear, it seems to work OK the way I'm doing it now.

TIA for any replies. 8)

Boss Tu-2 is the best tuner on the market IMO........I have had one for several years.....It never leaves my pedal board.....I also use it for the bypass to run dual amps.......worth its weight in solid gold..........Congrats on the new stomp box............I need to rig my board so i dont have to use battries anymore.....changing all the time gets old and costly...

Happy New Year
Cheers
Bill

I've been thinking about the TU-2 for a while now. I've got a simple, handheld tuner that does a great job but I think it would be great to have one of these in my pedal chain. From what people are saying here so far, I'm leaning even closer to picking one up!

I have amps that have tuners on them. I do not use them very often, but when I do those amps cut the signal to the speaker. Honestly it should not really matter. Just know that some tuners are better than others.

My old tuner was a Boss Tu-12. I had it for many years. It still works, I was just looking for a tuner that did a little more. The Tu-2 not only is more accurate with pitch, it also can serve as a power supply to the rest of my pedals (up to 5 without power loss). IMO someone should not have to use more than 1-3 pedals at a time any ways, so it works out fine.

Back to your question, it you can follow the tuner's directions and listen to the pitch at the same time, you can train your "uneducated" ear to be able to tell if you are in the ballpark when tuning without one. I have been playing for years and can get the right pitch within being a little flat or sharp, but the rest of the strings are perfectly tuned to that tone.

There are many good tuners on the market. Some do the bare essentials and other offer other features for different tunings, etc.

The main goal is to play in tune. Make sure whatever you use is calibrated to A=440.

I couldn't live without my TU-2. Handier than a monkey's feet.

Most of you probably know this already, but... If using a battery in you TU-2 be sure and unplug your cables from the unit as it will drain the battery even if you stomp it off.

Just a tip for those considering picking up a TU-2. It appears Boss is releasing an upgraded version of this pedal, the aptly-named TU-3.

http://www.rolandmusic.ro/tu-3.php

Seems to already be available outside of the U.S., so I imagine it'll be released here in the States sometime soon.

Looks like the differences between the TU-3 and the TU-2 are pretty minor -- I'd bet you could find some TU-2s available at a clearance price once the TU-3 hits the stores.

GFS has a new Tuner pedal that is supposedly a clone of the Korg Pitch Black for less than $40...thinking about picking up one of those...

I use a couple $15. korgs that work well, 3+ years. To answer vt blackstrat, I was told to use the neck pick-up with volume at ten, to get best string vibration/readings for tuners, also to strum string at 12th. fret. supposely it helps to get an accurate pitch/tuning. Read something about it in Premier guitar mag. also. my ears can't tell the difference, played loud for many years.

Perhaps you should define what you think makes it the best because there are other tuners that are more accurate (e.g. Peterson strobe tuners are 10X more accurate). I do understand that for live/general use the degree of accuracy that a strobe tuner achieves is not necessary but when one states that something is the best, it is important to define why they think this and in what context.
