Once again I ask you for your input.

I am looking to bring my Marshall set up alive.

Options:

Marshall Vintage Modern 100w
Marshall JCM800 100w 2203
Marshall JCM900 100w 4100

I heard somewhere that 900>800, 800's price is more due to the popularity it has gained but 900 is as good if not a liiiiiiiiiiiittle better.

What do you think? Do you have these?

SRV......Very veague..poll and question

What type of music do you play?
Are you gonna gig it? //or use it at home?
How much gain you lookin for? // do you care about clean? // are you looking for reverb?
What guitar and effect rig you gonna run through it?
Is there a spific sound, Genere, band, or tone your looking to get close to?

All you listed are fantastic ampilifiers but all very different animals in relation to one an other

I guess that kind of info would help no?

Well lets see, I am looking to gig the amp, I already have a SS 30 combo for home practice.

As far as what kind of music I play, I range from SRV, Jimi, Led Zeppelin, GNR, Metallica, Greenday, Paramore, mostly 80's & 90's rock.

As far as guitars, Strat and LP will go thru it, and wah cry baby, and boss distortion DS2, I will attain a few more pedals but not right now, I guess I can get those according to the amp. I do want a good reverb and gain amp.

I hope that helps.

I just picked the one in the middle. When I was in school and had multiple choice questions and didn't know the answer I'd pick B. It worked then!!

Ok where to start..IMO your best bet for 80/90’s rock is gonna’ be the JCM800. the 900 and the VM will cover these as well but not as true to form as the 800..depending on which 900 your talking about for the most part the 800 is gonna have the most gain….the VM is the only one with reverb and to be honest its good but not great (reverb that is)…it will make the mix a bit wet but it’s a digital reverb and a Marshall so you don’t buy this kind of rig if your gonna play surf or something of that sort with tons of reverb…..the VM is gonna get you better SRV/ blusetypes of sounds with the Kt66 tubes even be more true to form for the zeppelin as it is more based on the blues breaker amp even know Page used Plexis and Orange amps.

Yes the 800, and 900’s are more popular I would not say there more money..in fact is you shop around in the used market you should find a good price as there are many of them in cirulation and are not hard to come by at all…. There all one channel amps but the vm has a foot switchable gain stage of low and high but it is not sinked real well as there will be a huge volume jump from low to high so it is not really disgined to work a a 2 channel amp.. now the VM will EQ a lot better that the other two which will be a lot nicer for your blues and classic rock stuff.. and sits in the mix better than the el34 amps IMO…. The VM is also a lot more pedal friendly than the other two..

A lot of dihard marshall users swear by the 800 as the end all be all of amps as it is the sound of the 80’s 90’s…..well along with the mesa Mark4 and rectifier. Truth be told they make a lot of different great amps. The 6100, jubilee, DSL, JVM……….the ultimate test is your ear and how it sounds with the band you play with….I would hit up Nikininja as well I know he is a marshall guru…I don’t remember I think he uses DSL’s

I don’t know if I helped you or not…happy shopping

Cheers
Bill

Well I have to start from scratch, last time I played a venue like that was about 10-11 years ago and that was to fill in for a guy that I knew needed someone cause his rhythm guitarist couldn't make it for some reason and I had attended to some of their rehearsals and knew the songs, I played 2 songs in front of about 250 at a summer fest out in WI and the rush was so great that I miss it ever since I stopped playing but now I am back home and started again so that's what I would like to play.

In the History of Marshall by Michael Doyle Jim Marshall says the best amp he ever built was the JCM 800 2203 100W model,so I guess that says it all.A friend of mine has an 83 2203 and it's an absolute joy to listen to and play through nothing and I mean nothing can compare.I have an 83 2204 which is the 50W version and I'm constantly offered way more than what I paid for it.The JCM 800s are still held in high esteem because of there unique tonal qualities. That's why Bill Gates doesn't have enough money to tempt me to part with mine. That may be a bit of hyperbole but if you own one you know what I mean.

The JCM800 is a great workhorse of an amp for most situations. If it's rock or heavy blues it will get the job done admirably.

SRVFender, I don't really have any input to your actual question, but I would like to thank you for the giggle you caused me with your brilliant thread title. Inspired! 8)
