Hey there all, I'm new here, if you couldn't tell. I've been a lover of guitars for a long time, and I figured after years of wishing I could play like the greats, I finally figured I should do something about it. It started with my Fender Squier P-Bass I acquired off my old roommate a year ago, and while I'm not very good at all (really, I ain't), I still love the feel of it in my hands, it feels right.

I guess what I was wondering is this. I'm starting to save up for an electric guitar, and I know NOTHING about buying guitars. What would you recommend for a newbie guitar player?

To anyone with experience and knowledge who answers this, I thank you in advance. *bows*

First welcome aboard! Guitars are very personal. I would ask you what your musical preferences are and what your budget is before recommending a guitar for you.

I'm gonna say to get yourself a stratocaster. If you want a Fender, you can't go wrong with a strat. For a beginner, it'll let you go into every territory you could think of.

As chris said, buying a guitar is a very personal thing- even for a beginner. If you ask 50 people you will get 50 responses. The best advice anyone can and should give you is to go to your local music store and try a bunch. See what feels good in your hands, what's easy for you to play and not get tired. Then research some more- the internet opens up a wealth of info for you- decide your budget, your style of music and research some more! Then go back to your local store and play a bunch more....can you see a pattern?
Good Luck.

I know just how you're feeling! we're in the same boat in fact although there is one small difference i have an acoustic guitar i have had forever and need to find an electric guitar! I am still looking for the One Axe * One Axe being kind of like saying One true Love! * But as i was saying i feel your pain and the only advice i can give you is to go to multiple guitar dealers and do not settle for what doesn't feel exactaly perfect in your hands! And try any guitars that apeal to you even if they are out side of your price range that way you can learn to tell the difference beteween a decent guitar and a cheep p.o.s.! * Plus a little tip is to take a friend with you who knows what they're looking at after all you do not want to go in blind! You will be garenteed to get ripped off bad!!! :( * Good Luck to you!

Yup, it's all personal preferences. But I can tell you that you should buy the best guitar you can afford. You're more likely to enjoy practicing and it'll save you on upgrading later.

cryingstrat brings up a very good point- so many times I hear people say they want to start playing guitar, so they start with a cheap...er, inexpensive one to "see if I like it". Then they don't stick with it because the guitar is so hard to play for longer than 5 minutes. I'm not saying you have to spend $1000 on your first guitar, but if you do your research and play a bunch of guitars, you can find a good guitar that won't set you back a month's salary.

Hey!!!!, my story is somehow similar, I've been a classic guitar player for many years, always hoping to try electric guitars and play like the pros.

Finally, made the leap and I'm enjoying every minute.

Find the guitar you feel fits you, best if you try it first. At the beginning the guitar does not have to be very expensive but rather make you go on and on until you re ready to invest in better equipment.

......Dont wait as long as I did....

Best of luck and welcome.

Wow, thanks for the tips and advice guys, I really really appreciate it. I did some thinking and I decided on a Fender Stratocaster. It took some thought, but I feel confident about the choice.

I've gotta get an amp too, obviously. How much should I be expecting to pay for a decent amp? Nothing too fancy, I'd have MAYBE a budget of 100-150 dollars for an am after buying the Strat...

You can't go wrong with a Fender Strat. Just make sure the guitar is set-up properly. As a beginner, you don't need to fight the the guitar if the neck has changed (due to climate changes, etc.). Just have a qualified tech. give it a 'once over.'

welcome, and make sure you play everything before you purchase it to make sure it suits you... a strat would be a good choice and i'm assuming you don't need all that powerful of an amp so possibly check out a roland cube or a fender frontman 15 possibly, although i'm not sure on eithers price
