Most of the streets in my area of Florida are wide three lane thoroughfares in both directions. Last night I'm running in the center lane, no one behind or to my right, and this BMW 3-series passes me on the left, cuts in front of me to exit literally seconds later on the right at the next intersection. What the hell was that?!?!?!?

I've also had that happen on limited access highways under the same conditions. Left me wondering if the right lane had dissappeared.

I would sentence people cited for speeding, reckless driving, or DUI to 12 months of weekends observing the goings on in the ER of a Level 1 trauma center.

+1 to that. I doubt some people would understand the reason why they were there though.

Just put em on a motorbike in Nottingham. Best driving lesson I ever had. I went from driving a car with the attitude of "everyone on the road is a idiot and wants to hit me", to "everyone on the road is trying to kill me". In the space of two and a half minutes. All because I lost that fragile metal cage around me.

As much as I dont like admitting it because of its delivery. Arkman is correct. Good tarmac behaviour starts and ends with you yourself. You cant cast blame on every other driver. You dont have their view of the road and are not in their circumstance. Doc that guy who cut you up could have been rushing his in labour wife to hospital. Thats something that will get you off the hook with a lot of driving offences in the uk. However unlikely its always a possibility.

Personaly in the UK I think trucks/HGV's should be taken off the road. The whole road haulage industry is un-economical. I clock up around 65000 miles a year all across the country. All the major traffic accidents I've seen have had a HGV at the front of them. Whether they are the HGV drivers fault or not is irrelevant. The highways of the UK are simply not designed for them at their current high levels. Never mind the caffine crazed european drivers riding the tachometers of hell. Who are not subject to a lot of UK regulation.
Cross country shipping by freight is far more cost effective, would provide more jobs, and is more ecologicaly sound too. Its only downside, the goverment would lose millions in fueltax.

..............unless actually asleep at the wheel. I was really specific about the traffic last night because the vehicle overtook, then cut in front, and directly to exit. There was no reason why that vehicle couldn't have been in the right hand lane to exit. :?

I have also had experiences having been well in excess of the speed limit in the far left lane of a three lane road, no one to the right, and have a vehicle come up behind me, force me to move over, pass, and then move center, then right, and exit. What the hell is that :!: :?: :!: :?:

Then there are the so-called 'headless drivers' here in Florida. Seniors in vehicles whoses steering wheels they can't see over. That's a story for another day.

Zombified drivers are the absolute biggest danger on the road. What do we do to allieviate the problem. We put in a overly controled system.

Some years ago I bought a book called "The drivers survival handbook". Basicaly its written by an ex-traffic cop, to inform the motorist how traffic law stands. And tips on getting out of speeding tickets. The author despises the roadside camera traps, claiming they cause drivers to drive whilst being overly attentive to their rear view mirrors. Consequently causing more danger. His biggest tip on evading camera's is simply dont speed.

Anyway he goes on to tell of the dutch guy who invented the Gatso gun. It was designed to measure formula1 drivers speeds. The inventor as an experiment took a quater of Rotterdam and removed all the street signs, roadsigns and road markings in that quater. They also turned off all the traffic lights. Consequently the accident rate in that quater dropped 80% for the duration of the 2week period. Why you may ask? Simple, drivers were forced to think about their actions and what other motorists were doing. As soon as the traffic lights and road markings were put back the accident rate returned to normal.

Anyway here's the book, sorry it doesnt cover US or European law. But for english drivers I can vouch for its effectivness. Its gotten me off the hook 3 times now. Saved me a total of £400 in fines, simply through its section on how to deal with and talk to the police.

My solutions to these problems would create a storm of protest in these pages. My own counsel will I keep on the matter. We've had enough controversey recently and I'm absolutely not interested in any opinions from Minnesota on the ethics therein.

Enough said. 8)

I have noticed this primarily in elderly drivers. They start to make a turn and slow down to a crawl and swing it very wide.

Wow, if you tried that in Italy, they come up to your back bumper, flash their lights while honking their horn and then scream around you in their BMW doing 160 KPH (99 MPH for us Yankees).....

Hahaha! :D

Luckily in Italy they all drive the same way, which helps avoid (more) accidents.

One time I saw nose-to-tail traffic stop-starting up a steep hill. Absolutely none of those drivers bothered to do a handbrake start: each one took his foot off the brake and then rolled backwards about five feet before he got his gas engaged and pulled fowards up the hill. (No self-respecting Italian would have an automatic gear box.) If just one of them had done a proper handbrake hill start the one in front would have rolled back and hit him, but in fact they all rolled backwards together before moving forwards in perfect choreography.

It was poetry to watch!

Ah. That most definitely applies to me. Apologies - it won't happen again.

-Tailgaters.

-Those who go way below the speed limit when the roads are dry, uncrowded and the visibility is clear.

-Even worse when there are two lanes and each one has one of the above both going the same speed so nobody can pass.

This of course leads to people tailgating because they want to pass the guys nobody else can pass.

-People who zig zag in & out and cut everybody off, and make it harder for people to do lane changes they need, because they aren't looking--as in someone goes to zig zag around you while your signal light is on, so you can't make a lane change--then they get back in the same lane. If they didn't zig zag I could make the lane change easily and they could stay in the same lane and zip ahead way over the speed limit.

1. People who drop off or pickup their precious kids and block traffic, or park in the handicap spot, because god forbid, their child should have to walk an additional 20 feet to a parking spot. I see this a lot at the dance studio. and gymnastics place my daughter attends. Which makes it more ironic.

2. Old people going 10 miles below the speed limit in the passing lane. Or if its snowing 20 miles below the posted speed limit anywhere.

3. People who don't use their turn signals.

4. Cell phone talkers, guys tying their ties, and putting on your eye make-up while driving.

I love when it snows REALLY bad and people (with a brood of small children) walk in the street that is covered in ice and you almost splatter them all over the road.
Funny thing was the sidewalks werent that bad....
Pick up your damn kids., and please pay attention.
