Hey everybody. I trust most opinions here so I'd like to ask this. I'm researching a fuzz pedal and I've come down to a few.

1. Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi
2. MXR M173 Classic 108
3. Fulltone Catalyst

Any experience with these? Opinions?

My gear is a Custom tube amp based on the Fender Princeton of the late '50s with a MXR Carbon Copy playing an American Standard Strat Stock. Thanks.

I know you didn't ask about this particular pedal, but I really like the Way Huge Swollen Pickle. Highly versatile, sounds great through a Blackface amp and the "true bypass" really does little to impede or alter your signal. Sorry I couldn't/didn't speak to the others.

I use the Little Big Muff Pi as its a lot more pedal board friendly than the gigantor series plus it has accents of the russian muff ion there too along with the NYC.

Its great and creamy and has that amazing wall of sound thing goin on.

I recommend you try them all and youtube has a few good shoot outs between diff kinds.

play them and you will see.
i freakin love the big muff tho, all of it's variations within the species... it's just outrageously fat and fuzzy. you don't want a fuzz to be well behaved

Thanks everybody. I ordered the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker based on YouTube videos. Many good comparison shoot-outs there. One of my criteria is a true bypass as well. Thanks for the suggestions and opinions. Rock on my fuzz face brothers and sisters!

I'd try the EH English Muffin. It does the Big Muff Pi and a lot more. It's tube driven and the tubes are user replicable.

That does look nice. A bit out of my price range at the moment (read unemployed). I've always been intrigued by Seymour's tube pedals. They are even more $.

I'm returning a Boss SD-1 that just sucks my tone and doesn't really make me happy until my amp is cranked. It does add a smooth creaminess to the mix at that level. The money I get back will help pay for the Muff. I'm looking for something that will breakup at lower volumes. Thanks for the heads up. on the English Muff’n. Maybe someday. In the meantime I hope the Muff with wicker fits the bill.

Fulltone Catalyst is great for a real fuzz (not distortion/overdrive).

I've had a Big Muff Pi since 1970,I've tried others but none can give me the violin like sustain the Muff can. Many bands I've played in did Hendrix covers and the Muff can handle the tone quite well(If only I could play one tenth as well). The only distortion effects I've used are the Muff and the Marshall Guvn'or.

I have no idea why I never saw the humor before now. Never made the connection, I guess.

A fuzz pedal named Big Muff Pi.

Now that's what I call a woman tone.

Hey 63Supro,
does the English Muffin do dynamic, uncompressed, early overdrive sounds too?
I been looking at them but can't find one to play yet, nobody has them in stock right now.

I have had a Big Muff for the longest and nothing has really changed my mind about it.
