Here we go again. Yesterday was my 18th blood donation. I don't count them to compete with others but to keep a personal record of it. At 52 years old I know that I will never be in the top 10 but it is a personal satisfaction to know that someone, somewhere will benefit from such a simple anonymous gesture. Either to help someone recover or save lives.

If your health allows you to give blood, please consider it. The only cost is a token of your time and if it can help, think of someone you love.

I don't target this specific time of the year to talk about this. Blood is needed yearround. There is a blood center in the mall where I was yesterday and while shopping I ran across my donnor card.

If for any reason you can't give blood, don't feel sad, this thread have been discussed before and everybody knows what he has to do. There is many ways to help. Giving blood is just one of them. :)

I applaud you!!! I can no longer give blood or blood plasma. When I was younger I gave blood plasma 2x a week for years.

Try Plasma donation Bill. They put the red cells back and you don't have that problem. I've done it, and it didn't phase me at all.

I just gave again a couple weeks ago, my 46th donation. Two more and I hit the 6 gallon mark. They make us regular donors wait 8 weeks between bloodlettings; BigJay, once a month for a year? Your arms must have looked like pin cushions. I have also found that I am a lot better about keeping on a regular schedule if, rather than filling out the reminder card, I request the courtesy phone call. It is a lot harder to say "No" to a live person than to ignore the card when it comes in the mail.

im not sure, im quite young so i haven't really given too much. I think ive given a pint here or there.

Also, Wow bigjay, you must have got like a $1000 for all that. Its like your being paid to not only save your own life, but save others aswell.

Which brings me to my next point, giving blood kinda sounds like being a superhero 8)

Claude sir, your post has resulted in my making a New Years resolution to go and donate blood, for the first time I'm sad to say, as I'm also 50+,we see and hear all these posters, adverts and such and think it's someone else their talking too, well it's hit home big time, my family have for the past couple of years until only a few months ago watched our mother fight and lose her own battle with cancer ( myeloma ),I was only reading about it again a few hours ago when Miami Mikes good & bad of 2009 thread appeared and started me thinking about everything, and some time later deciding to glance at you thread, unaware of why, except curiosity,so in letting us know you give blood, you have possibly contributed to many others reading your topic also deciding to follow your example, hats off to you again Claude

Hey ripitup555, don't be sad. Even if you are in good healt, giving blood is not for everyone. Some people have phobias, fear, ignorance, some simply don't want to. It's OK, there are many ways to help, and live a meaningfull day that makes a difference for others. I'm glad that you considered giving blood for the first time, after that you'll have the knowledge that will help you decide if this is a way for you to help.
Either you are rich or poor, the fact is that the ultimate priceless thing you might need someday to live through another day and recover, could be a simple pint of blood. :)

Claude,

I commend and congratulate you! I have been regularly giving blood since I was in my late teens.

The last statistic I heard about blood type A+ is that 34% of the earth's population has it. Why do I even know this? We have the same blood type!
