I did ... when I was 16 ... and I even had a plan lined up. I had a P/T job at a local grocery store (20 hours/week) and I was getting a lot of work as a bass player on weekends, making decent money for the time at that. In my case, it wasn't so much that I wanted to disappear but that I'd had it "up to here" at home.

Nothing I did was right from my hair to my politics to my grades to you name it. Even the music I played p'eed off the folks mostly because it was old stuff so they couldn't hate it with a straight face. All this was at the boiling point when I ran into a guy I'd gone to church with a few years before at a local coffee house.

He'd been in the Navy (Vietnam era) but got tossed out. Now, he had a decent job and an apartment. As one of the few old time friends he remembered, he invited me to drop by sometime. Sure I said and about a month later, I happened to ask him if he could use a roommate. Well, maybe ... he could use the money ... but "dude, are you 18? I know I was in your class in church but I also failed a grade."

Instantly, a plan formed. "Yeah, I said ... I never failed a grade but I started kindergarten late. I still live at home 'cause I only have a PT job and play music on the weekends. But I'm looking to get out if someone would accept my not having a regular job full time." He hemmed and hawed, and wasn't quite sure, so I dropped it.

Then, only a couple of weeks later, the final blowup hit the fan and I found myself walking down the state highway in pouring rain, one suitcase and my bass in a case wrapped up in a plastic trash bag to keep it dry. An hour later, I was at this guy's door and explained (sort of) what had happened. "Okay," he said, "you can stay for a couple of weeks but, are you SURE you're 18????"

This could go on but I survived it while working the job, finishing high school and playing on the weekends. I even kept up my end of of the rent and food unlike another guy who ended up staying there too. But at the same time, with some of the anger now blunted, I made contact with my parents. Over time, we managed to work things out.

If nothing else, my parents couldn't believe I could have made it on my own, and neither could I to be honest. But you do what you have to and you make it work. Eventually, they came to one of my gigs, waited until it was over (they never stayed up that late) and told me I wasn't "half bad after all. Not even too loud."

Eventually, my 7 month run away from home experiment came to an end. I'd made up and good thing as the guy I was living with decided to move his new girlfriend in. With her in, I was out ... and that was that.

So I'm not going to say you can always work it out at Ground Zero ... sometimes you need the perspective of distance and so do the others involved. Just if you do, have a plan (even if not the world's best) and make it work. Meanwhile, unless there just can't be any reconciliation because your parents (or whoever) have committed what amount to crimes or moral attrocities, open a small channel of communication once you feel the anger blunt a little.
