I see more companies producing these (Blue, Audio Technica, Samson, etc..) but what is the advantage over a normal LDC or dynamic mic when using a tube preamp?

Just convenience. No major difference, just makes it easier to move back in forth between systems and recording setups. Hell, when my wife broke her cheapo video game mic, she plugged my $300 Shure mic into the playstation to play Singstar=\

I agree...it's just more convenient. I have to admit the Blue Snowball mike is prettty impressive.
