I call that ilk, "Stevie Ray Vaughnabees".

I'll never understand why every player doesn't strive to create their own identity. I feel bad in a way for this segment as they choose to do exhaustive research where the ultimate aim (whether they'll admit it or not) is to try and emulate someone else, being able to expound on even the most irrelevant bit of minutiae of that player with absolute authority, right down to the point of being able to accurately predict 95+% of the time when this hero of theirs will have a propensity to fart.

Unfortunately, this segment has chosen for themselves to never be original, certainly never be someone else's guitar hero and playing wise, will only be as 'important' (for lack of a better word) in direct proportion to their hero remaining popular among a fickle public. In the final analysis, I guess that's their right and privilege.

I have arthritis in both hands and my left fretting hand is the worst affected,I use 8-38s and low action but most times the pain and cramping prevents me from getting through only one song.Take care of your hands and if you feel pain it's time to take a break.

Like I've said several times in the past, if someone is striving for a specific tonality and sustain which heavier gauges and action present, the same can be achieved with lighter gauge strings and a tweak of the amp.

Oddly enough, this comes from my previous years of being in the orchestra. A couple of years ago I would have the same pain in my left hand from playing the cello, and I figured out that I was just straining my hand too much.I had a vice grip on the instrument.
When I play my strat, I generally keep my action pretty low to reduce tension in my hand, and I always stretch and give my hands time to "warm-up" before I start playing with the band. And if you do feel that strain, just take a break: sometimes you learn more from taking breaks then you do playing your fingers down to the knuckles.
Just remember to try to stay as loose and as tense-free as possible, because you definitely don't want to have Carpeltunnel (spelling?)
