Very true. I hate that X-Factor pi5h.

I could always sing and was never taught, just like my guitar playing. I learned through being in bands, being on the road etc. In practical situations void of theory. I was always good at it. Plus I write my own stuff and can cross genre easily so I'm no one trick pony either.

Nicely done!

Now if there were more bassists and drummers that took that initiative...

Het peoples, I just thought this would be the right thread to post this;

I sing to myself, I write lyrics, when no ones home I play guitar and sing. But, I'm to nervous to sing to anyone. Any help?

I thankfully come from a musical background on both the paternal and maternal sides of my family both families were comprised of musicians.My mother was a chuch organist and my father was a choir director(that's how they met).Although I never took any voice lessons I absorbed enough knowledge of proper vocal technique through osmosis I guess.I sang lead vocals in many bands or shared duties with another vocalist I can sing the lead or any harmony part of any Beatle song and a few times as a lark entered karioke contests and won(a few times singing Roy Orbison's Crying).I started out singing Donovan songs in coffee houses in the late 60's and just went on fromthere.Strangely enough neither one of my parents has ever heard me sing.

I discovered my voice some years after being part of an elementary school choir. It was the late 70's and I found myself being able to sing Ronnie James Dio, Steve Perry, Kansas and others.
Confidence comes when you develop skill, and the actual singing and playing live is a rush that few things can compare with.
The voice depends on your lungs and how you learn to shape the sound.
A self-respecting singer never lets others dictate the key, either learn to say no or you lose your voice.
The other thing is to never push the volume.

I think we probably start learning to sing before we learn to talk. We are taught to imitate the noises we hear when just a baby. So that part could be considered more "natural". Playing an instrument is not naturally learned. We are born with a voice, not born with a guitar. Singing or playing in front of a bunch of people may or may not be that easy. I've never really had much performance anxiety. It has always come easy for me. I think because I come from a large family and we had to do something to get attention, so I'm naturally trying to get more attention.
