Try the Blues You Can Use series of books. I started the same way, with Hal Leonard, and these were a good change of pace.

Give the Mel Bays Method books a go, I found them very easy to follow and learned a lot.

I think you should checkout some DVD instructionals, as some of them are just great no matter what level. And you get to see hands on what is happening.

Do a search under learn and master the guitar. It's the best dvd based self learning set around. i already have the set for piano and it is excellent, my neighbor just had a look at the 1st disc, and now wants the whole set bad. I'm going to snap up the guitar version this weekend, as it's on sale for a hundred bucks off through this coming sunday. The piano set is worth every penny, i have no doubt that the guitar version will be the same. They also have a blues guitar set, and learn to do guitar setups for $50 per set.

I bought the set by Alfred Publishing Co. titled
"The Ultimate Beginner Series - Electric Guitar Basics"

It consists of the book, a CD inside and also an instructional DVD in the shrink wrap. I'm pretty satisfied with how far it's gotten me in less than three weeks. I have a long way to go but the DVD is huge for helping me learn the open and some barre chords and it progresses into blues and some lead. It actually moves faster than I can keep up so I practice a lot on the chords and strumming techniques without the DVD then see how well I can apply them to the lessons. Was worth every penny of the $25 I ponied up for it. Without the new added DVD, the book and CD used to run $10 retail.
