John Winston Ono Lennon
On the night of 8 December 1980, at around 10:50 pm, Mark David Chapman shot Lennon in the back four times in the entrance of the Dakota apartment building. Earlier that evening, Lennon had autographed a copy of Double Fantasy for Chapman who had been stalking Lennon since October.
Note:Chapman stayed untill he heard the police and the ambulances

Lennon was taken to the emergency room of nearby Roosevelt Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:07 pm. On the following day, Ono issued a statement, saying "There is no funeral for John." Ono ended her statement with the words, "John loved and prayed for the human race. Please pray the same for him. Love, Yoko and Sean."

Chapman pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years to life; he remains in prison, having been repeatedly denied parole. Lennon's body was cremated at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. According to some accounts, Ono scattered Lennon's ashes on Strawberry Fields; according to others, she kept them.

Two days before his murder, Lennon told Andy Peebles of the BBC that he felt he could go out anywhere in New York City and feel safe.I guese that he was cocky for him to say that.Your a famous person and you would think that there are no carzy people. On another occasion while still a Beatle, Lennon was asked how he might die. Lennon replied, "I'll probably be popped off by some loony." During an interview with Dave Sholin at The Dakota hours before his murder, Lennon stated, "I've always considered my work one piece whether it be with Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, or Yoko Ono. And I consider that my work won't be finished until I'm dead and buried and I hope that's a long, long time.

Poor John

I like the Beatles alot. Most of John's solo work was pretty forgettable to me but there were some good songs on Double Fantasy. Sad that he was killed at a time when his music seemed so on track.

As for his feeling safe and being able to go anywhere, it sounds naive but in those times it didn't seem that the crazies were as widespread, shooting up churches and museuems, I just don't get it.

I remember that day he was shot very well. I was a paperboy and it was on the front cover. I just remember thinking than that what sense did it make to take out Lennon? Still makes no sense to me.

I knew the who/Chapman, I knew the where/Dakota, and the when but I didn't know about those quotes.

I found it interesting, I'm part of the .01 % I guess. :)

I used to walk past the Dakota every day when I lived in Manhattan. I got such a sad feeling every time.

The Beatles are as much of my life as getting dressed everyday. That was the first music I heard blasting in the house and I grew up with them, no band is even close.

I was 18 years old and had my first apartment with three of my friends and I can remember them cutting in on the radio to say he got shot and being up all night until the news broke that he died and being totally numb.

I live in NY so it was even weirder. To think that piece of $@!& killed him just to be famous makes me sick. My best friend did 10 years in Attica State Prison and said they kept him out of population so he would not wind up with a shank in his back, but saw him a few times he was in the hole and said there was always people coming to see him and they let him have a guitar. Can you believe that.

Now he has the balls to be crying he did enough time. Well all I cam
n say is a lot of people grew up on the Beatles and I dont think he is ever going to see the streets again. I cant believe John died for something so senseless. And yes Double Fantasy showed he was back in stride as I was not a big fan of a lot of his solo work up till that point as he had Yoko and all her weird yaking all over his albums.lol

Thankyou for that post mate. I remember the day he died, I was only 8. My mum was crying. I couldnt understand it at the time. Some longhaired bloke she never knew was dead, so what? That was pretty much the way I thought of it then. Now I'm older I understand why it meant a lot to her though I dont fully comprehend the way the Beatles had impacted her life as a kid. Luckily or unluckily I'll never really understand that.

I still dont like Lennons solo work, I dont think it stands up to Wings. I do however like the Beatles. I think he needed George in particular to temper his wilder more surreal side.

Anyhow its time to go blast mystery tour to the neighbours.

I saw the movie and it was good I thought. I wasn't sure if that photo was from the movie or real life.
