I just saw it tonight, and I was blown away in every manner.

A rich world, awesome graphics, awesome action, awesome character growth.

Awesome movie.

Anybody else see it? What did you think?

I haven't seen it yet, but I really want to. It seems like an awesome movie. :D

Oh, and Brian May gave a review of it on his Soapbox:

"**Sat 12 Dec 09**
AVATAR!!!

Avatar? Am I allowed to comment !?

I loved it.

My God ... it makes you feel humble ... it really does. I've spent a lot of my life around 3-D images of various kinds, but I have to tell you, looking at this, I feel nothing but awe !!!

Unlike the Christmas Carol 3-D movie, which, being ALL CGI and motion capture, unfortunately, in spite of some astounding work, ends up looking like a video game ... this one shows us proper people, skilfully mixed with computer created landscapes, characters and special effects, which ALL look utterly real ... it's not possible to find a flaw or a join. It really LOOKS like 10 years of inspired labour. And 300 million dollars .. it's kept a few people in work !!!

The story is essentially Fern Gully (I saw that with my kids many years ago) - with some nice comments on the preciousness of the Natural world and the stupidity of modern Western Man. With the added concept of the Avatars themselves, the whole thing is so beautifully crafted at every level, you cannot help many sharp intakes of breath.

Fox were clever enough to choose a premiere cinema with a silver screen, too, so they were able to use the vastly superior REAL-D system of circular polarisers .. so very little eyestrain, and a lovely bright, clear picture ... miles better than that very gloomy Dolby system which made so many people grumpy at the Christmas Carol showing I went to.

Cameron has a lovely way of making the 3-D seem natural - you never feel over-cooked ... and I think for me the pièce de résistance was the way he subtly made us feel we were ON the planet Pandora, by simple devices like having pollen, or floating seeds, or other materials like ash in the air all around us - or so it seemed. Simple ideas, but so hard to pull off, and so perfectly realised. ... AMAZING !!

I won't spoil it by going into more details - all I can say is ... go see it ... my hat is off.

Cheers
Bri

In the sixties, Stanley Kubrick teamed with Arthur C. Clarke and he said:"Let's make a good science fiction movie" and they gave us 2001 A Space Odyssey. From the end of the seventies, a lot of good sci-fi movies were made based on Philip K. Dick stories; Blade Runner, Total Recall, Screamers, Minority Report, Paycheck, A Scanner Darkly. I saw Avatar yesterday and all I can say is that it will fit amongst these great movies perfectly. Cameron mixed the real actors with the virtual ones flawlessly. If there were glitches, I never saw them. It was a real surprise to see veterans in the movie.
Go there, sit down, put your 3D glasses and relax, enjoy the movie it is a hell of a ride. :D

I saw it and thought it was an ok movie, I didn't think the effects were extraordinary but not bad. I thought the whole bad American white man/Left wing slant was pretty obvious and that took away from the movie for me throughout. Not bad but I definitely wish I had known a little bit more of what to expect before I spent my money on it.

I saw it yesterday in IMAX 3D, and it was AWESOME! I loved the plot and the effects, and plan on seeing it again, soon.

Thanks for that tidbit. (I added bold and underline) I've seen enough of those myself to last a few life times.
I will not waste my time or money on that.

Is it anti-white man, or is it anti-imperialist? 'Cause we're paying the price
for our interventions.

Either way, "Avatar" looks dumb. I'll pass....

I watched it last night, sadly not in 3D! (not available in my city!) But if I go to Athens before NYE, I'll go to see it again properly in 3D!

James Cameron is a GENIUS! The shots were UNBELIEVABLE! IMO, the plot had some holes at a few points, but other than that it was a great movie.

I also LOVED James Horner's score (huge huge fan of his!)

About time Hollywood gave us a non political/drama where everyone gets killed and chaos rules everything!

Wha? That's crazy! It essentially retools Dances With Wolves with a eco-friendly theme.

Well it certainly has everyone talking doesn't it. Great technological tour de force. This is not an 'ugly American" movie however. It reflects the recurrent historical theme of expolitation of one civilization by another for gain across the panorama of the ages....Spain in Mexico for example, harvesting the Amazon rain forests for another, and wrapped in the mythological trappings of "The Force", "Yin and Yang", and a touch of Hinduism, Pandora becomes Arrakis, becomes The Arabian Peninsula, 'unamium, melange, petroleum, the inevitable charasmatic leader, the Quizatz Haddarach, the worm rider, Lawrence of Arabia, reincarnated.

Personally I'm just not into movies that use too many computers to make them, so pretty much 90% of everything that comes out today does not look appealling to me...

I respectfully disagree and have also seen the interviews with Cameron where he clearly states that there are liberal undertones and propaganda in this movie. If that's not what you took from the movie and you enjoyed it that is all that matters. I have even had friends of mine who consider themselves to be Liberals who even said that the slant of the movie is noticeable from early one. I am glad you enjoyed it and others have as well, but I won't be spending my money on it only the be lectured on how bad America and the white man are. Take care.
