I have been playing mostly straight guitar to amp, or Guitar to tubescreamer, to amp, lately.

I was rummaging in the basement and found my box with some of my old stomp boxes. Among the were a compressor, delay pedal, and a chorus, and some others. well all I can do them now is destroy my tone. I have completely forgotten how to use them

I remember that I used to be able to use this stuff. grr

I don't even want to try fiddle with the old wah pedal now.

I have some sitting around that I have not used in for ever. I know what thet are for but now days I can go without. I think many of us as we progress we buy different ones and experiment with them then move on to the next.
12B it might just be time for you to start tinkering with them all over again My Friend. Another thing is maybe try modding one or two like Keelys mods.
I have no doubt it will all come back and more.

Right before I got hurt I finally put my pedal board together perfect and now it is in the basement. Come to think of it I had bought the Digitech Hendrix pedal which I loved ans was complicated to learn the settings. Good thing I have a copy of an old guitar magazine that reviewed it as it told the settings. That was one kick as pedal as the clean tone for the Wind Cries mary I used for mostly all clean channels it was that good. Also the wah on the Voodoo Chile setting was the best I ever heard.

Hi Twelvebar. Drive pedals are just for the practice amp, far as I'm concerned.

Don't need many others, but I do sometimes want a bit of chorus on the clean sound, and I wouldn't want to be without the option of a touch of delay set to that "is it there or isn't it?" level. Adds some space to lead lines.

And I couldn't be without the compressor for my early Knopfler moments.

The rest are just toys.

Cheers - C

The only thing on this planet I cant get used to are multifx. I'm constantly on pedals. I usually have 3 drives a chorus a couple of tremolo's, a reverb, a delay and a wah. If I'm really control freakin it I'll add a couple of eq's and a sub octave divider.
Never got round to the board part of it, much like Mondo.

I gotta say chorus has to be the easiest effect to get wrong. It seems like everyone I've played lately goes from zero to underwater warble on the depth control in the space of .0001 of a turn. I like em with a good deal of depth but no speed to give that pseudo 12string type thing.

So true. But then we can say the same of most FX - people have them set far too high. What sounds good to the player often doesn't to the listener.

Only answer to that for someone starting out is to go out front and hear someone else playing through your settings (with the band). You suddenly realise how overcooked you've had everything.

With chorus, when I was beginning I was aiming for Andy Summers type sounds. Man what a messy noise I was making, till I found out...

Nothing like a Strat or Tele into a compressor with about a 65ms slapback delay and a good Fender tube amp.

When I play 80's stuff I generally go on my Digitech RP355 with my own settings I created. Normally I will just go straight into my amp with my Reverb on 3 and there you go...my tone. I used to love the heavy distortion and lots of delay and compression and a nice thick chorus...OMG what was I thinking . Now as I have mellowed I play alot like Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh of the Eagles do. Funny how as I have matured...LOL I have mellowed on the FX

Well after a bit more time fiddling with them, I am starting to dial in the old sounds. but I am starting to remember why they ened up in the box in the basement to begin with. I think that unless I actually need them for something specific i really prefer the sound of a good guitar plugged as straight as possible into a good amp. Seems to me everything comes with a price tonewise.

Right now because I live in a townhouse I am using a little Champion 600. I changed to a better speaker, and it sounds great. So my favorite setup includes Strat>ibanezTS808 (my old one I have owned for over 20 years,)> my reissue reverb tank ( an older one of these ) > Champ600.

I'll keep fiddling with these stomp boxes though, and see if I can get used to them again.

Try em in different orders mate. Also I haven't played with a champ600 so dont know for certain. But perhaps it just doesnt take pedals well. My vibrochamp is king of the house amps round here but really doesnt do drive pedals or compressors well. Its ok for a smidggen of delay or tremolo and thats about it. I did think it was due to the processing inside the amp, these days I believe its more to do with the speaker.

"chain" them all and go for weird spaceship noises. Tons of fun after a few beers.
