Hey guys, anybody has experienced how bad it is to have a Scratch, Dent, or your very first guitar/bass ding?

I had mine 2 days ago... I bought the bass a month ago knowing it was already dented.. probably two or 3 marks on back of the neck..
I went to a gig, waited for hours for our turn to play... I almost fell asleep, the after the gig, I hurried down to the backstage carrying my pedals, cables and sling my jazz on my shoulders then suddenly... BANG!
I accidentally hit the post there and awww hell... it looked like a cute evil hamster scratched my bass..

Nothing like that first new and shiny guitar. You handle it like it was a new born baby, and maybe that is why women are much better at handling babies. The bottom line is if you are going to play it like it should be played things are going to happen.

I can have a few guitars out in the basement and see the dings from across the room though most people cant see them playing the ax. When you are playing you are not thinking of such things and the funny thing is it is when you are done and thinking is when most accidents happen.lol

I am totally not into the artificial relic look and try to keep my gear as clean as possible, but there is something attractive about a guitar that has that natural played hard look with a few dings and dents in the right places that got there by you and not a belt sander. I guess you can say every ding tells a story.

Eyecandy, I feel for 'ya! Happened to me 2 weeks ago. I was polishing my 2 month old Gretsch Pro-Jet and there it was, a "ding" about the size of a dull pencil point on the top edge. I know what caused it but don't know how or when it happened. It did'nt freak me out as much as I thought it would, though, $@!& like that is gonna happen, unless your git is a "case queen" I told myself, at least it's not on the front where you can see it! Regards G.G.

It's kinda like cars, eventually you do get over it.

it kinda reminded me when i bought my first mobile phone, first i was really furious especially when my sister dropped it... then i bought a case for it which i didn't know the case itself scratched my phone... then its been like 6 months now, i don't think of it that much..

well i guess its more like a 1st gig, 1st dent by me... i bought it already with a few dings, and well its the first time i added another one...

there's nothing else to do but to live with it eh?

Don't worry about it, as its legit road wear/relic'ing, which people pay extra for...not only have you saved money, but you now have a legitimately worn guitar

I stopped worrying about dings about 16 years ago. The worst ding I ever had on one of my guitars was when my son and daughter were running around in the house. I used to have my guitars on floor stands back then. It was knocked over and the neck was cracked almost in half at about fret # 5 (it hit the coffee table pretty hard). The only thing holding the neck together was the rosewood fretboard.

What can you do? That guitar became the Mod guitar from Hell. By the time I was finished with it, the only thing stock was the body and tuners. Eventually I just got rid of that guitar for somthing new and shiney.

Life happens, I got over it. Since then, minor scraps and dings do not affect me the same way as they once did. My guitars do not sit on the floor in stands anymore. They live either in their cases or up on the wall.

Since you gig with your guitar, I recommend a good hard shell case.

I absolutely hate dings that's why all my guitars I bought new are practically dingless,my wife thinks I'm obsessive,I'm just very particular who touches my babies.

I treat my guitars like gold.........taking care of them, cleaning them, etc. So far, the only marks I have is on the pick guard from the pic (Looking around to knock on wood).

The first ding on any guitar hurts, even the ones I bought used that already had dings in them.

But you get over them, in time, and future dings don't hurt as much--they do build character--for the guitar...

When I first started playing 11 years ago...

the ONE TIME I don't fasten the strap that holds it to the floor stand...I kick the gretsch over and whalah! I have a nice new dot on the side of the neck. I colored it in with a black marker, because the neck is black and the board is rosewood, but it faded and is forever staring up at me when I'm playing.

anyways I'm sure there's more to come.. I'm saving up for a hardcase as well.. and next time i might not carry all my equipments all at once...

I can relate man, I dinged my Hwy 1 for the first time not too long ago and I am sure you know how unforgiving nitro finish can be. I made a topic similar to this one, so I salute you and will take a moment of silence for your bass.
