Over 40+ years of playing guitar, I know that I have developed some bad habits along the way. One in particular is the tendency of hooking my right hand while picking, especially when picking out a solo. Now, I have tried to to overcome this rather nasty habit but have been unsuccessful.

Is there a glove of some sort out there I can wear that forces the right hand to the proper angle for guitar players?

Nope, no glove bro, just a wealth of different guitar players to challenge yourself by. Try something completely different to what you are used to and then something different again. Eventually habit will die and you will be a greater player for it.

Forever and a day will I recommend Izzy Stradlin's solo stuff to anyone who hasn't heard. So many different styles and with Ron Wood and Rick Richards (Georgia Satellites) to help him along you cant go wrong. Folk, rock, rock n' roll, blues, reagga (or however its spelled), honky tonk etc.

Just an example but best way is to try something out of your usual pocket, challenge yourself. Don't settle for comfort to start with. Find an uncomfortable chair and do all you can to MAKE yourself comfortable.

Just my advice. Take it easy bro.

After 40 years I am afraid that will be hard to change as you are really on autopilot. After 30 odd years for me I wish I picked with a closed hand instead of fanning it out and have tried on occasions to change but it is just not as comfortable.

There really is no right or wrong the bottom line is what works best for you. Unless hooking your hand is really stopping you in a serious way, I would just forget about it. Hendrix chording with his thumb would be considered bad technique also Vanhalen picking with his thumb and middle finger, and when it comes to fanning out George Lynch really pushes the envelope but all three guys are phenomenal players.

I'd have to agree, unless this habit is stopping you from doing something you want to, why worry about it?

I'm far from a virtuoso, and I'm sure that being self taught means that my entire way of playing is a primer on bad habits. But, oh well. I'm not looking for a career, just some fun and relaxation.

Just play and don't worry about it. Play how you play not how some musical theory professor thinks you should
