I had my acoustic 12 string strapped on and the strap slipped off the strap knob.
I tried to catch it with my elbow--which I did, but I cracked the top.

It still works and hasn't got worse--but a bad way to catch a guitar.

But the dumbest thing I contemplated doing was converting my EB-3 copy into an SG copy, and building a new bass body.

I would have had a bad bass and a bad guitar, instead of a decent bass.

ok...i have a cpl. the first is actually on my dad...we have a matched set of 72 d35 martins, and he went out side "wearing" his, tripped and fell and added an extra sound hole on the bottom side of the guitar by falling on the lava rocks in front of the house....needless to say the lava rocks went away not long after...

Second, my ex wife and i where having a fight and she threatened to break my guitars and i had a custom made neckthrough semi hollow double cutaway lp guitar, and i got mad and said fine i will do it for u and dropped it on its face, and the neck broke off at the body......we cried and said we where sorry, but the damage was done

not too long ago i bought a new 000xce martin to carry on the road to save my 35. This is a composite guitar, suppose to be unbreakable, well it took me two days to prove them wrong, some how i managed to crack the back of the guitar. I have no clue what happened, but i was sick..........

one time i was playing in lubbock and i raised my arms over my head and i guess i didnt get my strap locks locked well and my 96 am standard fell face first on my pedal board, nick it up pretty good....but as a testament to fenders, i picked it up and strapped it back on and it was still in perfect tune!!!

The dumbest thing I ever did to a guitar was give it back to someone after the "gave" it to me. But being the good friend I am and knowing that he needed the cash to pay court fees I did it anyways.

Another time was when I let my roommate back in college try out my guitar. He was new to guitars at the time and wasn't really paying attention. He spun around quickly and smashed the headstock into my bedpost. Again, not much damage but my heart was racing when it happened.

I did something like that when I was about 14. I was playing my best friend's guitar, and doing some stupid rock moves, when I smashed the headstock into some shelves. Luckily there was no damage, I just had to pick up all the books and things that I knocked out of the shelves. And it probably scared me worse than it scared her, but needless to say I gave the guitar right back and I've never goofed off with someone else's guitar again. I don't even goof off with my own anymore.

You know, now that I think about it I've never dropped a guitar and had it hit the floor. I've made some miracle catches though.

easy - the dumbest thing i've ever done is sell one in the case of my MIM tele - loved that thing.

second to that, I'd say i $@!&*% up my first guitar (squier fat strat) pretty bad experimenting on it, and scratching it up. Did a master of puppets cross thing on the pickguard and then scraped it all off, ripped out the electronics, dug a gauge out on the body to make it look reliced lol.

Not doing that again in a hurry....

+1 to blackcat. Very noble of you! Kudos to that. Solidbody... I could have killed him at the time. But she was wrecked anyways after someone knocked her over and wrecked the g tuner. She was lovely to play, and i miss her, and wouldn't be on this forum if it wasn't for that wee honey, but i wouldn't be on this forum if it hadn't happened also. Well, maybe i would. It's impossible not to fall in love with a fender telecaster ain't it? All good. All water that has not only passed under the bridge, but i reckon it's now bein sh@t on by some penguin
EDIT... Got wrong username there lol. Doh!

Dumbest thing I did was to trade my first guitar which was a stratocaster for a Gibson SG. I had bought it second hand and it was older, I am not sure of the exact year but pretty sure it was a pre-CBS...

The dumbest thing I ever did was drink a bottle of London Dock(100 proof rum)one day while jamming. While playing a lead break I stumbled and headed face-first for the floor with my lovely Hagstrom II I managed to hold the guitar out of harms way but gave my elbow a severe mashing as that took the full brunt of the fall. After that I limited myself to a beer or two while playing.

I had a '54 LP TV Model that I sanded down to natural wood because I hated the fugly yellow color.

If I only knew then....

Yeah, but it *was* ugly yellow mustard colored...I did get good use out of it with the P-90 for several years and the natural wood looked better. But, I was so much younger then...
