That's their "Metal Face" because they are so hardcore and crazy. It's all part of the act and persona.

when ever I see metal bands I think about Uriah Heep and Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and yes led Zepplin too many others to mention from those early years, if I remember they all made some silly faces, must be the rockin' pneumonia and the 'boogie woogie' flu, 8)

They do look pretty funny, and I guess all the reasons listed are as good as any others. I am no longer "current" in the circles of heavy metal though so I wouldn't know. My "metal" days were in the 80's and you'd have to throw spandex and hairspray into the mix

Almost all guitarists have a "face" when they play. Watch Greg Koch sometime, he's very animated and makes tons of grimaces and grins while playing.

I dont think we're talking about playing guys. Everyone with an ounce of emotion has a playing face.

I think we're talking about their faces in photo shoots and band shots. Kerrang! style.

They look like they are 5h1tting hot coal.

You're right, it doesn't make sense in a photo shoot unless it's one of those "live" pictures where they're playing a screamer note or something.

In a group shot it is pretty funny. I suppose it's them trying to maintain the persona they're trying to project. Hey, I'm a KISS fan so I could comment on all the photos and posters I have where this is true. Gene would be the most guilty of it, the demon persona and stuff.

Like this one, obviously they aren't performing since they're on the top of the Empire State building, shot on location, not a backdrop. I do like this poster though :)

It is show biz, lets face it a lot of music is based on presence and stage production is huge to a lot of bands success. When I was young KISS was one of my favorite bands but after a certain point a lot of there stuff songwise sounds ridiculous today. Songs like Ladies Room with the double play on the word MEET MEAT YOU IN THE LADIES ROOM and a slew more did the group in for me. But till today those live shows are great memories and for putting on a show a hard band to beat. It was cool when they did the unplugged because they played songs that were recorded after I stopped buying and they were good and had some substance that made me buy the CD.

If you think the metal guys look bad go back to some 80s hair bands where most of the players tried to look prettier than the goupies yet they would actually try to flex and look hard in videos. At least some metal guys could actually pass for bikers. I am not a big fan of metal mainly because of the choice of vocalist most use that sound like the mike is down there throat and they are trying to $@!& at the same time. But I give it a lot of credit for making a lot of young guys pick up a guitar and really learn to play again after the no solo three chord grunge era. In fact metal might be the biggest reason for kids having chops again today.

I can't answer for others but I play metal and have never stuck my tongue out or made an evil face. I would feel/look stupid if I did.

Nope, its completely different, we're talking about facial expressions here, NOT image in relation to making you not want to listen to someone bro.

I understand where you are coming from though. John was being judged on not listening to his music because of the way he looks which IS ridiculous. Many of us here like metal, we're just riding on how ridiculous 5 foot skinny guys can look when they are growling at you.

It wouldn't put me off listening to them though which was the whole point of the J5 thread.

Chill out.

Relax CC, im just giving you crap. the point i was trying to make is that we judge people on the way they look regardless of how awsome they might be. you yourself even did it when you assumed that metal heads are just wimps trying to look hard. i agree 100%, i think the facial expressions are stupid and most the time i just shake my head and laugh.

I take your point man and like I said before, I see where you are coming from. Most metal players are small dudes trying to look frightening but I bet if they handed me a CD of their band I would give it a listen. I always do. My point is that it wouldn't stop me listening to them at all. I'm in the music biz and there's some weird lookin cats about but most of them sound amazing.

Peace. 8)
