There is something that has been puzzling me for some time. Why is it that when a lot of Heavy Metal players pose for pics they grimace like they're trying to force out a petrified dump or licking their tongues out like they just bit into something rancid?Anyone have theories or answers?

As for the grimace, that's anyones guess because, I sure don't know. The tongue though, maybe it's meant to be a symbol of the serpent, or satan. That theme seems to run deep with quite a few heavy metal groups.

It's the same reason they stand with their feet no less than 3 feet apart and the higher the note you hit, the wider you have to open your mouth LOL.

It's showmanship, just leave it at that. Blues guys do faces too, rock guys, even jazzers have some expression skills you name it.
I don't play metal because I can't. I'm too old to think musically the way they do. While playing a zillion notes a second real loud is impressive, it gets pretty old real fast to me anyway.

They do look pretty funny, and I guess all the reasons listed are as good as any others. I am no longer "current" in the circles of heavy metal though so I wouldn't know. My "metal" days were in the 80's and you'd have to throw spandex and hairspray into the mix

Almost all guitarists have a "face" when they play. Watch Greg Koch sometime, he's very animated and makes tons of grimaces and grins while playing.

I dont think we're talking about playing guys. Everyone with an ounce of emotion has a playing face.

I think we're talking about their faces in photo shoots and band shots. Kerrang! style.

They look like they are 5h1tting hot coal.

It has to do with looking tough. It is silly and I do not do that when I play (right, we all do). I do not want to get into a crapping match over this one though, but have you ever noticed that when Blues Players hit certain notes it looks that they just squeezed one out.

Honestly I think it has to be the fact that the guitarist gets lost in the moment they are in and they are just in their zone. Snap some pics of yourself when you are practicing, I would venture to bet you would not want some of those pics getting out. PLOP

:D :D :D :D

I never got into the metal scene...I was always in Eagles style bands so...spandex and big hair were not in the cards for me  but it is funny to see some of the faces and poses..:)
