Crazy statistic from my favourite band Guns N' Roses:

Released 71 songs via albums, singles and compilations. 58 before Chinese Democracy.

How many were covers? 18

Thats only 40 original songs before Chinese and includes 2 versions of Don't Cry and You're Crazy and not counting the countless Stones, Alice Cooper, Elvis, Pink Floyd, John Lennon, Faces, Aerosmith and AC/DC songs they did live but never recorded.

AAARGH CC you said GnR!

The first album was okay, but horribly overplayed in the States.
The Spaghetti one was at least interesting and they chose some good tunes

Their other efforts (IMO) are rubbish.

The band had some talented players to be sure, but I just don't think they ever really lived up to it.

I don't think it is nearly as bad as some of you make it out to be. There is a big difference between cover and tribute bands as others have mentioned, but I think a tribute band of a group or act that is no longer performing or all the members are dead can be a cool thing. Like a Jimi Hendrix Experience act done well would be a pretty nice show to see.

  They are my fave band ever and as you can see from other posts, I have worked with more than one.

IMO everything was good til Izzy left. The only guy who could discipline the ego Rose, i.e. his best friend who wrote EVERYTHING. Hence the only album without him was a covers album and it took the ego 17 years for the next.

Listen to Izzy's tracks form the Illusions (he sings lead on 4 of them), (everything except November Pain and the covers). They were amazin. But too young, too dumb etc to survive. I'm surprised they got as far as they did and I'm glad Izzy left them because I have 11 great solo albums of his with guys from Faces, Stones, Black Crowes, Bob Dylan and Burning Tree to enjoy til my hearts content.....and another coming.

[EDIT] And again IMO they more than lived up to it. They havn't worked together in years with a SMALL amount of songs out there and I see them on the cover of at least one magazine per week plus they are now icons and in my opinion THE LAST great TRUE rock band. Plus in a weird sense I'm glad Izzy got smart and Steve messed up otherwise I wouldn't have made a name for myself workin with their various solo projects. Love you bro, please go easy on the reply, I have a tattoo of these guys. lol

Stradlin FOREVER. lol

The other guys are arseholes though but I love them, just as most of my friends are arseholes too.
Peace,

CC  8)

I dont even like G'n'R that much (I like em but never been head over heels) and I have to agree. That lost all the rock n roll element on use your illusion, and everything I attributed to slash was missing.

I'm a different kettle of Guns fan. To most real fans it was always Axl and Izzy's band and they were lucky to have a guy called Saul 'Slash' Hudson for 9 years out of 25 years.

Slash never did it for me. Izzy's Stonesy rhythms, songwriting prowess, tongue in cheek lyrics and classic Tele's and Gibbo hollowbodys. Thats what I loved. But too short lived.

See now thats what I noticed to be lacking on use your illusion. Slash was and is bugger all without it. Any idiot can do drawn out slightly sharp or slightly flat bends.

In 87 I was very new to guitar, maybe been playing 2 years and megadeths so far so good was far more impressive to me at that point. I definately heard the lack in use your illusion, though it does have its moments.

Theres only 3 other albums that stood the test of time from that era in my mind though.

Peace sells (86)
Reign in blood (85)
South of heaven (87)

Yes I know master of puppets was out at that time but I find it boring. Its like the YES album of metal.

Dont like Metallica at all bro.

Bein an Izzy fan, especially his completely diff solo work, is what made me go to Faces, Exile On Main St, Muddy, Howlin etc.

Izzy is diff class. Made me the kinda player I am (Iz/Keef/Woody) Slash's LP thing just pi5ed me off in the end, it was real when he was off his face and playin wi Guns in their day but now he just embarrasses me.

I was like 'shut the Donald Duck up! Stradlins choppin!' lol Together amazin..apart...Slash is a parody....Iz is still groovin and doesnt need the limelight to enjoy his grooves and jam with big names. He jus kool.

See now I like all sorts from that era. Even Kylie's "I owe you nothing".

I grew up being blasted all them stones and faces songs that matter (lucky sod I am). In 87 I was a 15 year old testosterone fuelled teenager into most things abnormal. Thats why I liked those more out there forms of metal. Now I'm older I like it all, even faster pussycat.

Think its called trying to cling to youth during a midlife crisis.

It's cool that you dig them, everyone had different taste. That's what makes music so great. I'll agree whole heartedly with you that they were/are iconic and definately a bunch of Rock Stars. Now then, you don't really have a GnR tat do you?

Yup, when the last one of our friends turned 18 (while ago now) we all said we would get the band that we loved tattooed on us. Havin seen GN'R when I was 9, loved Izzy forever and worked with Duff, Gilby and Steven I'm the only one with no regrets.

Its not a crazy one its just the G N' F'N' R'S! scratched logo which I hid from Steven Adler cos I didn't know hoe he would take to a Sorum era logo!

All my mates got flavour of the month tats and hate them now, lol.

Its funny thinkin bout it now. I was 9 when I saw them, 9 years later tattooed and another 9 years typin this.

The nines are freakin me out! I need to stop drinkin and get some sleep!

CC
