Good stuff everyone is recommending .I agree with the Blues You Can Use stuff.Probably the most coherent lesson plan.It helps you with phrasing , which is the biggest part of the battle. The tendency is to just noodle over some blues track and hope it sounds ok.The important thing is which licks sound good over the I chord, the IV chord and the V chord.Going to open jams are great because you get help and input from seasoned musicians usually and you get to see how they do it.

Hey StratOblues is this the exact book you were talking about? http://www.amazon.com/dp/0793542057?tag ... 13G9J39FM&

Hello, that is the one  You can also buy the Backing track CD so you can jam straight over the top of the lessons that you learn :)

I am thinking of going back and working through the book to better understand all the theory, first time around I just learned the songs.

The CD is a big help. I always listen to the song just to get a general idea. Then practice without the CD to hit the notes cleanly. Then I take a stab at playing with the CD.

Make sure you read the front of the book regarding how to practice and how to practice the chapters. I take what I learn from the book and let my instructor critique my playing so I don't develop bad habits.

BlackCatBone: I say you would be happy with the product, I play the songs I have learned from that book all the time and I am still never tire of playing them. There is some great minor/major tunes and songs that sound like Albert Collins, SRV, Muddy Waters etc. I progressed further in the time working from the book than I ever have trying to noodle about. No need to thank me, I got it recommended by someone on another forum, and they probably got it recommend on another forum who probably got it recommended by their neighbour etc. etc. etc. :) Just keeping the chain alive

the thing I am having the most trouble with are the chords/tabs that require to you play it like a chord but you have your fingers on 5 strings like 5/6/7/5/5. That part is still tough. But I made it through 3-4 of the beginner lessons yesterday and was playing a Boogie Woogie in C and working on 3 octave appregios just to practice. So far so good though. And keeping the chain alive is what it is all about so I'll be sure to share this book with others myself.
