My pleasure...I was there in June and picked up Surrealistic Pillow, Volunteers, Imagine, Some Girls, Projections, and Zoot Allure. The guy gave me Projections for free!

I'm glad to see a resurgence in vinyl, the main go to speciality record store around here(Fred's) always had a section dedicated to vinyl but in the past few months it has grown immensely and mostly in the rock genre.I love to sit back and listen to King Crimsons 1st album,Pink Floyd,The Stones,The Beatles etc. on vinyl there is something about vinyl that imparts a unique warmth that's not possible to capture on CD.Now if only someone started making reasonably priced quality turntables again.

It's the music codec that is what is more important than the means of which it is delivered in my opinion....

I started out with analog tape being the industry standard. This article sheds some light on the codec part of it :

Also, check out www.tapeop.com

Cheers!

I realize everyone has a different definition of what constitutes reasonably priced, but you may wish to check out the Thorens line. They are generally quite well regarded and they do have models in the $500 range.

Currently on a vinyl kick myself that came about as a result of the fact that my old Technics turntable is at the moment the only reliably functioning component in my rack, other than the receiver it's hooked up to. I'm finding the quality of recent pressings to be far superior to the abysmal records that places like MCA were churning out in my youth, and they have completely changed my perception of that medium (just got a nice 30th anniversary pressing of Dark Side of the Moon in the mail today, as a matter of fact).

I have a vinyl related question. Where can I find some good sounding, reasonably priced speakers to hook my parent's old turntable up to? I tried using our home stereo system, but the output of the turntable wasn't high enough or something. It wasn't loud enough, you could still talk to someone on the other side of the room and hear them perfectly well over the music.

Interesting. Assuming your amplifier has sufficient power to drive the speakers it's hooked up to (presumably it is, since you are not having this issue with other sources), you might want to check to see if that turntable is using a Moving Coil cartridge as opposed to a Moving Magnet cartridge. From Wikipedia:

Quote:
A disadvantage however is that moving-coil cartridges generate an even lower voltage signal than an moving-magnet type cartridge. This is because the moving coil cannot be large enough (it would be too heavy) to generate equivalent voltage levels. The resulting signal is only a few hundred microvolts, and thus more easily swamped by noise, induced hum, etc. Thus it is more challenging to design a preamplifier with the extremely low noise inputs needed for moving-coil cartridge, therefore a "step up transformer" are sometimes used instead.

EDIT: Also, make sure the turntable is actually hooked into the phono stage of the amp. You can't just hook them up into a set of aux inputs like you can with some components. Some folks don't realize this (probably because not every receiver comes with a phono stage these days).

i've been buying quite a bit of vinyl myself, mainly because its cheaper than anything else. i often head to the goodwill or used music store and buy these things for like a $1 each.

i'm only 24, all my friends are doing the mp3/itunes thing. meanwhile i'm spinning platters. haha how odd.

Last year, I had bought a pair of Mirage Omnisat V2 speakers on clearance at Vanns.com Unfortunately, they are no longer available; they are amazing speakers for their size, very open and 3-dimensional sound. I don't know what else might be available...we had a pair of Polk bookshelf speakers that were pretty decent
