my gurss is 75% of the vinyl being bought is for cRap music records though, so that cant be a good thing. I was hoping the youths were finally starting to outgrow rap music.

I see more and more rock bands issuing vinyl...might be a good thing, though at this point, I'm still buying basically old stuff...I'll be in NYC soon and one of my favorite stops is Bleeker Bob's. Been going there since the 60s.

Anyone who is an audiophile knows your wrong on that. These are people who are discovering the great sound of analog. Vinyl sounds more natural then a Cd where the sound goes from analog to a compressed format. You want to hear what Led Zeppelin really sounded like listen to and Album! And today records are being made of high quality virgin vinyl. I get mine from Barnes and Noble and a few other places.

good point, but of everyone I know, grated that isn't everyone who buys vinyl but just a sample population, those audiophiles are buying hip hop. I do hope you are right though. Luckily I had a brother who was 11 years older than me and I inherited his pristine record collection of music from the 60-80's.

i know they are making records again for all the old classics, i still believe the majority of purchases are coming from dj's and hip hop heads, maybe there is a billboard chart or something like that for tracking sales? I hope for the sake of music going into the future that most people are buying Zepp and other great classics!

The main thing I prefer about vinyl is the eq setting on the final mix. Theres a definate mid quality that just isnt on CD, minidisk, download or tape. CD seems to be mixed with a definate scoop. I know vinyl isnt mixed with a mid peak but it seems to be a lot flatter.

lets face it, nothing looks better than a big black piece of plastic slowly turning. Even 78's dont spin as fast as a cd.

I'm 17, and I've recently gotten into vinyl because:

1. My parents have a massive collection spanning the 60s-80s (mostly 70s) and I've found some fascinating and obscure stuff in there. I'm dying for a turntable that can convert them into CDs or MP3s so I can listen to them on my iPod too.

2. They're fun to play and I like the sound.

3. Used vinyl is as cheap or cheaper than buying used CDs, and way cheaper than downloading off iTunes at a dollar a song. I'd rather buy used CDs and vinyl and get more music than download things off iTunes. Although I do use iTunes for music I can't find in stores.

4. Sort of relating to #1, I can find lots of old obscure music on vinyl. And I like old obscure music. Used record shops have a cool vibe and a good selection most of the time.

5. Cover art and liner notes. If I can get a physical copy of an album I will, just for that. But I won't pay $15 for a new CD with ten songs on it, I'll save the extra $5 and buy five more songs off iTunes. Same with new vinyl. If the price is a few dollars more than the number of songs, then I won't get it unless I'm dying to have it.

I don't really know of anyone else who purchases music like that though, but I have a whole system going.

And I really don't listen to rap, and I really don't understand why you'd want to scratch up a perfectly good record, so I can't comment on that. I treat my vinyl like priceless prehistoric artifacts. :P

I think this is good. I personally don't own a single cd but have nearly 300 records. Always looking for new or interesting ones to add to my collection. Its great having all these cool records from the 70s and 80s and hearing them how everyone else would have heard them, and I love the retro vibe they give off.

Haha, this makes me SO happy.
I love vinyl--always have, always will. I've never bought songs online, or even just one song from an album. I don't plan to change this anytime soon.

It's always been CDs, or, if I'm lucky enough, records.
Oddly enough, we didn't get our turntable working until about two months ago. Needless to say, it's been getting quite a workout from my Queen records and the ton of records Mom has acquired over the years.
I've actually found one artist whom I hadn't heard of before; Steve Forbert. I now love his work--it's really nice to listen to. :P Mom's been trying to get another album of his on CD through our Inter-Library Loan system at our public library, but we've been having some roadblocks in trying to get it.
Ah, well.
I'll just hope for the best.

Anyway, I REALLY want to get "News of the World" on vinyl. I don't have that CD, so to get that on vinyl would just be AWESOME. :D

I'll have to stop in a few record shops in New York on our next visit there.
Does anyone have suggestions for some good ol' record shops somewhere in/around The Village? :P

Edit: Typo

I still shop at Bleeker Bob's in the Village; have been for going on 40 years, and in a couple of weeks, I'll be back there during winter break.
