The way my dad simply puts it:

"You're talkin' about item #347 on the list. Right now we need to focus on #2!!!"

Tell them your reasons (leave out "this sucks") and they should be okay with it.

1) And most important, your grades need to stay up (it's your future after all, and most musicians don't become rockstars so you're going to need a real job)
2) Your musical tastes are different so it's not really a good band fit.
3) The availability of band members to practice together is sporadic.

OK, I just sent in my letter of resignation so we'll see what happens...

And yes, I left out the "this sucks" part.

I agree with Jay, be honest and upfront and tell them face to face. What is the worst thing that could happen?

The thing about face to face is that there probably won't be another practice this month and I wanted to just get it off my back without waiting and thinking about it for so long.

It's always a good idea to leave out the negativity that may upset or insult them.

I would say something like:

Hey Guys,

I really need to focus on school now, and work on my grades. Unfortunately, I would be doing this band a disservice by trying to stay part of it, so I am going to bow out for now. I wish you guys the best.

Then you leave doors opened, and no bridges burned.

Believe me, I have been alive along enough to know, that when you burn a bridge, you inevitably will want to cross it again one day....once you burn it though, its usually gone forever.

All my bands have ended in flare ups, shouting screaming and fighting. Good luck.

And $1500 a gig, wtf?!
