So here's the specimen in question:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1963-Fender-Musicmaster-w-original-case_W0QQitemZ110464038737QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item19b82b7751

It does look pretty good to me, but I just wanted to consult the more informed users here before I did anything. The only thing I can really see with it is that it could be a non-original pickup under the p/u cover, but I can't see why someone would do that to a "lower-end" guitar like this one.

I've wanted this guitar for a long time, and it looks like it might finally be time I got it! :o

So, how's she look?

That sunburst color, then known as maroonburst, became available in 1961. It was phased out in 63 for white. The body could be a late 62, but the color is legit. The true slab boards were phased out in 62 on most all Fenders. The neck date probably refers to the assy time. So it could also be a late leftover from 62. Looks legit but I'm no expert. Hope this helps. Nice guitar..... 8) Mike

I may be wrong but the tone and volume controls don't appear to be original, they are way different from my '65 Mustang which shared a lot of hardware. Also the saddles look Tele style I don't know if they had them but I'm sure someone will set you straight.
