I'm repainting a strat replica and I was wondering if a sealer is necessary after sanding before spraying on the primer.
I can't find a sealer anywhere, and I don't mind using up a few extra coats of primer. : /

There are a couple of websites about painting guitars. Do a Google search on the topic and you'll probably get a good answer.

Aaaahhhhh - don't do it!!

OK, I calmed down now. What I mean is don't do it like you're painting your front door! Do some research and do it properly - you could easily ruin it in so many ways...

Hehehe
I'm pretty good at painting ....I've done custom controllers for gaming consoles before, etc.
It's just that I think paint will behave a bit differently on wood than on plastic/ fiber glass that's all.

I read up on it, and no I don't have to use a sealer (yessssss!!!!!!11!!!1one), now I just have to choose a colour.
Any suggestions? I know it's of a personal preference, but still....

Phew, glad to hear you're taking it seriously!

My faves for a Strat are black or red - pure class. But I guess if you're doing the job yourself, why not go for something a bit more radical... how's about hotrod flames over black?! :D

I've always liked a Lake Placid Blue Strat.

Might as well go all out and do something a little challenging. Do a nice two-tone burst, hehe.

Thanks for all the help guys. I settled with white for the colour (I'm using Holt's Dupli-color). I've done a few coats of primer on the body (needs a few more). And painted the headstock, but I'll have to redo the top cot, because some dust got on it.
So far so good.

Sure thing, if I can find the camera. lol

By the way, it's an Encore strat, so don't be surprised to see terribly cheap hardware and poor quality in the guitar.
(That's why I decided to paint it....the colour was terrible and, because it's an Encore I've got nothing to loose).

A buddy took his Strat to a car body shop. He told them that the next time they paint a black car to spray his body. They used car primer and some kind of car paint. No sealer. The final product is fabulous looking. Glossy black, almost like a mirror. Now after all that, I'm not sure he did a good thing. It seems the concensus of refinishers is to apply thin coats of paint for the best tone and sustain. I've refinished Tele bodies and always use oil or a thin clear nitro cellulose. I'm not brave enough to try paint!
