I have a 70's Gibson G-35 SS amp. Exactly like this one:
Image

And in the same condition I might add.. Well, used to be anyway. The speaker has been punctured from the edge to the center cone.

I'm looking for a replacement speaker.

The other guitar player in our band will be replacing the speaker. Since I'm pretty sure there would be no way to find another one in the condition this one was in, I guess I'm just gonna find a modern one to drop in it.

I'm sure there are people on here who are more experienced in what good speakers are these days, and to be kind to my friend and band-member, I want to keep the cost around $100 or under.

The speaker needs to be a 4 ohm 12". I'd like to find a speaker that has a good midrange clean sound. That's basically what makes this amp special. Midrange chunk. The amp itself throws out big mids and Bass tones, and I need a speaker that can handle that. But I want to make sure it has a good clean sound and not muddy or too honky.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Try Weber speakers. I've used his speakers in the past with great results.

Here's a link;

Good luck

For a mid honk speaker I'd consider the celestion G12m-70 T357. Thats the 4ohm greenback and has a very good midrange response with a tight bass end.

You could get a 15watt 4ohm 12" Weber Blue dog they are around 100. but I would not spend more then that on that Amp. The amp is not worth to much more then that.

Did you look into re-coning the original?

Good idea! I haven't heard of anyone doing that in a while!
Can you still find someone to do it?

Yep!

Lots of companies still do it. Just Google it. If you're brave, you can get a kit.

Nope, and usually they're as good or better than the OEM.

No, I didn't. I didn't know people still did that either. I will definitely look into that.

I know the amp basically isn't worth a whole lot, but anytime you see a vintage amp in great original condition, it's a treat to encounter. It's in as mint as condition as Ive ever seen one. The person I bought it from said he basically kept it in a closet for 20-years. I kept it in my closet for about 10 myself. I only use it to record with every now and then.

Incidentally, I also own the grand-daddy of this CMI version. I believe it's just called an SG. Hard to tell, it's really hard to get any info on it.

This guy here:

I've had it for 22-years now, still sounds great. 1 12ax7, 2 6l6s, 6x10 closed back cabinet.

Thanks for all of your responses. And thanks for the links 63Supro. I'm definitely gonna look into that. I appreciate all the input.

The problem is finding the right cone, dust cover and ring for each speaker. Your has a unknown speaker in it. When I pulled the spec for your model G35 it just say 15w 1-12and ypu say its 4ohms so I would guess its not a popular speaker for parts mainly because of 4ohms 12" and the G series was one of Gibson's low budget amps.

Yea, I am a bit worried about that myself.

This is the schematic I looked at to find out the ohms. It doesn't say on the speakers themselves.

http://www.gibson.com/Files/schematics/ ... 20A%29.pdf

I did check out the Jensen website. If I'm not mistaken, some of these G-models did come stock with Jensen at times. It's so hard to tell though. There's not a whole lotta info on them, or very many around to look at. But I'm not opposed to just going modern with it. I guess the main thing is that the end result sounds nice. Believe it or not, for a lower level amp, it has some sweet sounds for recording. It can be a great contrast with a Fender sound for doubling.

Conceivably, it wouldn't be detrimental to any of the electronics if I go with an 8 or 16ohm speaker would it?
