I'm searching for players experiences in their guitar playing. I'm getting back into guitar after 25 years off and am having a blast and learning more than ever with the online tabs sites, magazines and free lessons. I would like to learn some more rock/country/blues style songs that arn't too difficult but sound good and are fun to play. Please let me know some songs you learned early on and still enjoy playing today...not like "Little Brown Jug"..LOL..Thanks

Hey what? Little Brown Jug is great! :D

Hi jaknzax: for something heavy-ish Custard Pie from Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti is one I learned early on and still play. The chord work is easy but very satisfying with a nice medium drive on the amp.

The solo is straightforward if you want to learn it note for note. Just kick in a wah if you have it and go! Room for improvisation if you want, and I always treat the outro as a self-indulgent solo too. I've played it live that way: a nice track to cover because you can do it with or without a second guitarist.

Come to think of it, I really like playing the next track on that album too; The Rover...

Cheers - C

Pick up any one of the Beatles songbooks. Most of them are pretty easy to find several good tunes that you can pick out and learn quickly.

This is right up my alley:

Green Day: Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Bob Marley: Redemption Song
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Freebird
Crosby, Stills, Nash: Southern Cross
Zeppelin: Hey, Hey
Johnny Cash: Hurt
G-N-R: I used to love her
Beatles: Let It Be
Bon Jovi: Wanted Dead or Alive
Bob Dylan: Like a Rolling Stone, Knocking on Heavens Door

and check out "guitarjamz.com" on youtube, he has tons of newer rock and blues songs with lessons.

Have fun!

And then in my time of dying, houses of the holy, trampled underfoot, kashmir, in the light, bron-yaur and so on.... Physical Graffiti is the greatest album of all time

At the expense of sounding cliche I'd suggest AC-DC songs. Great for practicing major chords, relatively easy solos and some bending. All the staples for any beginner!

For as simple as AC/DC songs seem to be you will see so many club bands butcher them. It is not as easy as one would think to pull them off and make them groove correctly. Would you agree. I see a lot of rhythm players get a bit baffled by those simple cowboy chords, because they dont leave space and that dead silence in there playing. But I totaly agree there are a bunch of great songs to get under your belt early on. Hells Bells. Back in Black, For those About to Rock man the list goes on.

Johnny Kid and the Pirates - Shakin all over

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aBE1CcTH1U

A great song you can do a lot with, to make your own. The who's version is worth checking out. Just to see how they interpreted it.

It sounds great played softer than the original too.

My alltime favourite is Chuck Berry Come on

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzaKwUKOvbw

Its only F, Dminor and C. Easy riffs and again you can do alot with it to make it your own. Much like the stones did.

I too have seen many a band butcher Angus' fine guitar work. However; I stand by my statement that they are still great building block songs for beginner to intermediate players.
