so in school today i was talkin about some new song ideas with some friends and a kid was like "you play?" i said "Yeah" he says "how good are you?" i said "im pretty good, been playin' for 5yrs." he says "so can you solo like Hendrix and s***" i said "nah man im not that good, i can solo a bit but nothin major." he says "aaawww then you can't play man. you're not a real guitarist."

this got me so mad. has it come down to the point where if you can't make up intricate, long, solos you can't play? i mean come on. so what if i can't solo like hendrix or clapton, does that really matter? so what if i like makin' up chord progressions instead of solos. does that not make me a guitarist?

just wanted to vent

A thousand years ago when I was in school, I used to get knuckleheads like that coming up to me every so often. I would just tell them flat out, "Nah, I suck." They'd walk away smiling because let's face it, that was what they wanted to hear you say or for them to say to finalize the conversation. Down the road when they did hear me, well, they were the ones who were 'upset'. They'd come up to me telling me that I lied to them. I would always say, "Then as now, I always try to give my audience what they want."; and then I'd walk away smiling. Try it!

Hey Stryder,
I know we sound like a bunch of fathers here... but heres the thing. It's important how you feel about yourself, no one else. If they tell you that you suck, just thank them, and tell them you will do better... Try it one time and see what happens, I guarantee, YOU will have the last laugh...

Don't give it a second thought chief-they're just jealous of you because they don't have the determination and drive it takes to learn guitar. It is a lifelong journey...and you are light-years ahead of them in undertaking it. Keep up the good work! 8)

Man don't let that get to you. What you should do is let me upload a video of me playing and take it to school and show it to them if they want to see someone who really is a terrible guitarist!!! But you know what, I could care less because I am enjoying myself...and sounds like you enjoy playing too. Don't worry about it because that kid sounds like the epitome of lame as fukc.

But you're right, for the most part humans are a vile species.

Just remember this....a critic is someone who does not have the guts to try doing what you do. He has mastered the art of being a tool box...you on the other hand are a guitarist!!!:) IMO you win!

Stryder

Your still at school, are probably a raging torrent of hormones and have every right to hate everyone on planet earth.

I still take the standoff'ish approach with everyone I meet on a day to day basis. There is no law that says you cant dislike anyone, is there?

I fully advocate not liking or trusting people until they have earnt it.

Beat that kid up tommorow. You'll be doing him a favour and teaching him a valuable lesson that years of the educational system couldnt get into him. Dont piss hormonal guitar playing teenagers off. Their only 2 steps away from emo and nothing good will come of it.
Tell him Old Nick sent ya to learn him good.

Seriously

laugh at him next time and say 'yeah but one day I may just do it, then i'll be rich and that day the burgers are on me'. Dont be snotty, dont make enemies needlessly. Try and turn it into a joke everyone can enjoy, lifes hard enough without BS. Its hard to be angry at someone who just wants to make you laugh for the right reasons. Lots of people myself included got through a lot of their schooltime because of that. Dont be a clown, just be a cut above the rest when it comes to being smart.

Some good points.

I'd like to know who appointed him arbiter of all things guitar, but I had an attitude when I was younger...

But i always kind of downplayed my abilities because I knew so many people better than I was.

But I figured it's not a competition, and I was having fun.
And other people have enjoyed and thanked me for my playing.

When I was in school and taking lessons we had a competition where the band I was in kicked butt. Well except with the judge--I guess he didn't like us, but most of the others there--including the other bands--figured we should have won, and even though I was the rhythm guitarist, people were complimenting me--I only played chords, and I got thanks and compliments. It felt nice.

I felt like the people in bands that have big fanbases, but the critics hate them.

I never made it in music, but I had a lot of fun, and if you're enjoying it, that's the main thing, if you make a living at it--that's just icing on the cake.

It sounds like you're more sensible than the other guy.

And I would bet more people would want to be in a band with you than with him, once you're out of school anyway.

stryder, you are a guitar player and it is just that simple Bro. The guy that you were talking with can't understand what that means because before he has held a guitar he knows what a guitar player is and sounds like, not possible, he is what we used to call a 'slow learner' hopefully as he grows up that will change, hopefully. Now the more important part of the thread, You, good vent and a good recovery. This is for who ever that guy is:

we knew this had to end,
so sorry to see you go, [sic]
those expectations of yours are high,
but, I don't want to confuse you,
so let me say this real slow,
goodbye,
if you didn't get that,
here it is one more time,
goodbye.

and then throw down a little hendrix lick and mister know it all will get the message. You can jam with my band any time you like Bro.

Well said, I couldn't agree more. Keep playing Strider, doesn't matter what level you are and what sheeple say.

Stryder,
Dont sweat it man, next time it comes around, simply say"If I were as good as.......(pick the hero) I wouldnt be here!!
People that dont play just dont understand....They ALWAYS (even adults)
say"Hey can you play this??" If you say no they look at you with this"HHHmmmmFFFF" look...then I pass the guitar over and say "here show me how" :wink  :
Music to me is not how many notes you can play per second(if it were i would certainly be in trouble) It's about how you feel when you play. Dont sweat that kid, his girlfriend will probably end up as your groupie anyway..... Keep Rockin pal
